Hi Truth, I must have missed something as I don't know what you are talking about. Speaking or rings though, if you are refering to beauty rings, the car audio guys have a lot of cool looking beauty rings for all sizes of speakers.
 
Thanks guys. Lots of good info. I kinda need the finished product to have some WAF as the PE bill surely won't. Trying to get all my ducks in a row, if that's possible, before placing the order.

Looking at the link Zilch put up in response to my question about the round over, it looks like there is a reason to do it. Maybe even trim the lip on the cab or flush mount the front baffle. I had skimmed that thread before but hadn't paid much attention since I wasn't doing that type of project. Doing home work for the teacher does have benefits.
 
I need a tweeter that would operate from say 8K up.
Would the D220TI on the standard waveguide be a good choice?
Da ya think they would outperfrom the Eminence APT200?

I was considering using them as my rear speakers are econowaved.

E-Wave test results on Jensen Spectrum 540's

I finally had a chance to to build the crossovers (econo-wave for Dayton DC300-8) and purchased the Selenium drivers with the Pyle waveguides. Time to see if I can tolerate the compression drivers. If yes, the Daytons would be next.

Listened to several different LP's and was pleased with the clean and well defined high end. Bruce Cockburn, Pink Floyd and Dire Straits all came across with no shrillness or harshness. Much better than my forays with Klipsch horns. Then it was time for the acid test- (pun intended) Steppenwolf. Serious distortion and even the vocals are overdriven at times. Fired up "The Pusher". After a minute if listening I could tell I was becoming fatigued. I stopped halfway thru. While these sound much better to me than other commercial horn drivers, I still cannot tolerate them when I crank up my favorite hard rock or metal. I am comparing to a set of Adire Kit 281's and another set of DIY speakers, both with textile tweeters.

So these are not for me. I still congratulate Zilch on all his hard work and willingness to share his findings for all to gain benefit.

Turn that woofer speaker upside down so that the woofer and waveguide have a chance of integrating, and listen again. Also, invert the polarity of the compression driver, and see if that changes your perception.... :dunno:

1+++ on what Z said, and you might try turning the horn down a bit. It might be putting out more SPL than the woof.
 
My attempts to mate that horn to the 2214 woofer in my L100t's had similar results. The biggest problem in my case was that I had a hole in the mid range. Male vocals were in the background. Not even bi-amping with a DBX 223 could fix it. I am still planning on ordering at least the Daytons and maybe everything needed to build the standard ewaves. I am sure that with the help of this group that a cross over can be changed to roll off the highs and help contain the brightness. This horn has enough positives that I am willing to spend a little more to make it work for me. Everyone's tastes are different though and I may never be happy with them either.
 
I have to disclose my particular issue- noise-induced hearing loss. Music, drag racing, target shooting have all taken their toll. This is not about preferences for me- it is whether or not my tinnitus is cranked up when I listen to music. Horns have always aggravated the problem in the past.

Same issue here, just substitute farm equipment for racing although there was some racing involved. In my case the ewave horns are not as bad as my JBL tweeters. Those can almost instantly set my ears into shock.

I understand. I have a set of JBL 62's with titanium tweeters and they live in the garage and are only used for background. They are quite good bookshelf speakers, but I just can't crank them up.
 
"Econno-Kappa" 9 Cab Work Begins

Progress on rebuilding the Kappa 9 cabs has began, now that the weather had cooled off into the 80's I can start. The rear baddel section is pushed out about 15" x 58" off the rear. Hopefully I will have all the cab work completed this weekend. I have a fair amount of cross bracing to do, that was why I cut out and left remnants of the old baffles in place to brace from. The xovers, drivers, etc. are all ready.

One way to handle hearing problems like tinnitis and other hearing impairments is to "listen louder" at lower levels. Good quality recordings played at moderate levels in a very quiet envirenment thru gear and speakers that don't compress dynamics as so much of it does accomplishes this. The EWs and some tube gear seem to do this well if the source gear and material is equal to the task.
Most rock recordings are so badly engineered I just put up with the production staff's stupidity to hear what survived their incompetence.

Sounds like both of you may have problems with JBL's titanium tweeters. The D220Ti spec'ed in the EconoWave is also titanium. Maybe you should try a BMS driver with mylar diaphragms. They are smoother than the Ti and not so "in your face."

Same with the B&C DE250 designs, with Kapton diaphragms.

[Still like the Seleniums, tho.... :yes: ]
