Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

AK and Ewave mentioned in MAKE Magazine interview.

I thought I posted this here but I guess not. I was interviewed by MAKE Magazine last month. I talked about AK and about the Group-Sourced Ewave development as examples of how community interaction can raise the quality of DIY in a hurry.
Maybe this drove some traffic this way.
 
I still have chest pains and the pain in my arm but the docs could not find any indicatioin of an actual heart attach. At the time I was just cleaning off the work bench....no heavy lifting. Decaf coffee and Stanley Clarke.
 
Need help with grilles and the Econowaveguide wayback machine

I'm trying to find a post made somewhere within the 750+ pages of this thread that had a photo of some ewaves using some black sheer (silk?) grille cloth, smooth and somewhat see-through. I'd like to find where to get some like it. Does anyone remember where this was, or if you happen to be the builder of those could you check in?

I plan to make some new from-scratch ewaves with grilles lying right at surface level of the cabinet. The waveguides would be flush mounted (inset to be flush) on the cabinet face and a grill stretched flat across the guide, back-mounted woofer opening, and local area. The plan is to rout a rounded rectangle around the woofer and waveguide, lay the grille material over, trim it, then push some kind of elastic cord or gasket into the routed rectangle to hold the grill tight and in-place. Seems like a hare-brained enough plan that I want to try it on some scrap wood first before starting a cabinet with that scheme in mind. Any ideas on a suitable gasket cord material for this (white or black color would be nice)? Has anyone tried a grill like this, any advice or comment?
 
Spline used in window screens, probably available in a limited number of colors. Vinyl cord will do it also. There's also a wheel tool available for inserting it into the groove.... :yes:
 
I used sheer very stretchy synthetic fabric for mine. I got it at a fabric store in the swim/dance section. Mine was attached to PE speaker grille frames with double sided foam tape. Tha tworked but took a long time and was very fussy. The screen frame option looks much better.

Good thing that didn't happen when you were on a sailboat out on the lake hauling lines and shifting sails. It's bad enough in your own garage, but far from shore it's much more serious. I prescribe rest, no work, more rest, no garage cleaning, wine (good for the heart), no lifting heavier than a tonearm and lots of rest.
 
I think that's the stuff, Bauhausler, thanks! I'll hit the local fabric store and see what I can find. Do you remember what material it was (rayon maybe?).

Zilch, screen spline sounds like the right thing, hadn't thought of that. Is that a normal hardware store thing (can't say I've ever run across it on its own, though I never went in planning to make my own screens).

If you ask for speaker grille fabric they sell you thicker Jersey stuff that's more expensive & not as stretchy.
I bought a bunch of the stuff shown at JoAnn's Fabrics for around $7/yd. I asked what the fiber was but they didn't know. It's absurdly stretchy, like elastic. probably not Rayon. Makes it easy to fit to a square frame. I think it's used for swimwear and theatrical costumes. Comes in lively colors, etc.

Well, now that you mention it, I am going to bring my old sailboat back down from the U.P. this month. Four days solo.

How good are eWaves you might ask. Well, this morning I got my OblaWaves set up with, still in the garage, with a Decware Zen amp and a new Yamaha CD player. Cleaned the place up a bit and sat down to give them a good listen with my morning coffee.

About a half hour later, I got a shooting pain in my left arm, my chest felt like a sumo wrestler was sitting on it, I broke out in a cold sweat, had difficulty breathing, heart burn....so in short a heart attach.

Spent the day in the ER with wires and tubes sticking out every where and the bottom line is....they don't know what happened. More test this week.

So, if anyone ask you how good the eWave sound, just tell them they will give you a heart attach: they are that good.

I once had a stabbing pain like a spear throught the chest, I felt all puny and sweaty, ( I think from adrenalin ) thought the same thing. It was a pulled muscle in my chest of all things.

My father had the same symptoms you speak of, went to the hospital, decided to fly to Mayo Clinic to his own doctor, who informed him he had REALLY bad indigestion and needed to lose a few pounds.

Funny but very serious when it happens, you never know. Glad it sounds like you're OK.

Yep, I think it is stress. No work for about 8 months now and it has me all stressed out. But it was good to get checked out....one less thing to worry about.

Gee.............sorry to hear about your health scare. From the times we have talked I would say you've been handling your stress exceptionally. Yes:thmbsp: best of luck with your job prospect. How do the ER-Obla-Waves handle Celtic?

Hope you are feeling better and I'm glad that it wasn't really a heart attack. Sit back and play some good stuff on your O-waves and relax some.
 
I'm getting ready to order the trap cabs, DC300 woofers and some xover parts to complete a build of the standard ewaves.

Since I prefer sealed to ported speakers, is it practical to do these sealed? I know some bass will be lost but not too worried about it. Will the xover need a tweak for everything to play nice in a sealed enclosure?
