Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I have finally finished. Over the last year and a half I have been gathering the necessary parts. Well today I have finished the assembly and oh my god do they sound great.

For my build I used the following:

Pioneer HPM-150 cabinets
Pyle Pro PPA15 woofers
Selenium D220Ti-8 driver
Pyle Pro PH612 waveguide

My crossover was built from the recommended settings in the Ewave build thread.

I have attached a pic of the final (so far) product. I have some finishing to do, all cosmetics. I need to make up some grills to keep the boys wandering hands off of them.

Nice looking Ewaves...I bet those babies rock!! A fellow Ak'er is working with the Mods to have our Ewaves added, should be anytime now.
 
Thank you, they sound awesome. I am rearranging my listening area now so they can sing better. I figured as much, like I said I don't want to press, I this is a delicate situation, I was just wondering if it was still going to happen. Thanks for the feedback.

I looked at yours as well and they look very sweet. I love your speaker stands as well.

summary: I tune in some of the crossover values by listening tests after not being happy with my first efforts, then assemble them properly onto the PCBs into external enclosures, to make future experimentation easier.

corrected and cleaned up crossover using component values I can buy (using Jantzen components for pricing it up):

.. well I ordered a a pair of econowave PCBs from Zilch in December.
But the last few months I've had the remodelled crossovers laid out on cardboard while I've been tuning them. What a mess!

The original crossover I specced out in the above circuit sounded just a bit too bright too me, and trying different with attenuation via various resistor LPAD combos it didn't quite sound right. What sounded OK on one style of music sounded terrible with another.

I ended up trying various values out of curiosity, simming them up in speaker workshop for a sanity check, then adding them to the crossover and having a listen.

Adjusting the values of the RC high frequency compensation network yielded much better results, even though "on paper" it has more of a slight tail off in the high end than the "flat" values I started with.

I ended up trying a bunch of assorted capacitor/resistor values over a few weeks:

also tweaking the values in the notch filter (taken from the Econowave SR crossover) to make it bit flatter around the crossover point.
I ended up adding a 1uF cap in parallell to the 8.2uF cap for a total of 9.2uF.

The RC network I settled on was 14ohm/1.77 uF, made from 4 x 56 ohm 3watt resistors in parallel, and a 1uF cap with a 0.68uF cap.

Also during this time after reading of other peoples d220ti tweaks I damped the Pyle waveguide with bituminous flashing tape:

and did filled the back of the compression driver with bluetak and cleaning cloth:

This has definately made the waveguide deader sounding when tapped, hard to say if it has helped soundwise as i don't have measurements, but I think so.

Now to clean up the messy crossovers and put them properly on the circuitboards:

As later on down the track I want to experiment with active crossovers I decided to build the crossovers into an external box that will sit out of sight behind the speakers, and found a ABS jiffy box of the right dimensions at my local electronics shop.

as per Zilch's suggestion I screwed 2 terminal tagboards onto the corner mounting holes and used them to mount the Zobel network and the notch filter, and "LPAD" resistor (not a true LPAD as I'm only using one in parallel, but it modelled up well in Speaker Workshop).
I had to mount the high pass inductor upright as I had gotten a larger size than would sit down snug, also the notch filter inductor I bolted to the side of the enclosure using a bracket I fashioned from polymorph plastic.
Also the Jantzen inductors I used didnt have screw holes, so they are cable tied down I've damped them from rattling about with some ugly, but functional blobs of hot glue:

that can sit neatly in behind the speaker boxes.

The result is some speakers that really sound BIG yet detailed and pleasant, on all kinds of music that I've tried (some jazz, rock and a lot of ambient and electronic dub). I've been happily listening to "On Land" by Brian Eno and really getting lost in the sound.

love to build a set, but are there instructions for amateurs?

for example, how to cut the holes for horn/woofer, how to glue/screw woods? hooking up the drivers, etc.? thanks
 
I don't believe there are any such instructions, but I will say that it is far easier to convert a pair of existing speakers if you're a beginner. Certain speakers are better for this conversion than others. Just take a look at some of the past projects and you'll notice the Large Advent is the most popular, but there are a great many out there that will do just fine.

To cut holes, all you need is a jigsaw or reciprocating saw. Draw the outline, then cut the hole. Not much to it, really. You can hook up drivers using crimp connectors (extremely easy to use) or soldering, which is a little more difficult but produces a stronger connection.

If you really want to build your own speakers from scratch, you'll need some MDF for the cabinets, screws, and wood glue. You'll want to figure out the box dimensions, cut the wood on a table saw, apply glue, screw/clamp together, etc. Then you can veneer the boxes or hit them with some spray paint. Alternatively, Parts Express sells a trapezoid box kit as well as preassembled bookshelf speaker cabinets, but the latter would require a relatively small woofer/waveguide.

Got the mini waves done this weekend and let me say that there everything and more than I thought they could be. At first they we're a little harsh but once I got the Lpad dialed in the clarity,imaging and definition is so much better than they we're before its remarkable.I have a 7 channel setup ,yet I now would rather listen to music with the 2 econowaves and the sub.
Anyway, onto the build process.I went with the mini S8 build because it fit close to the box specs of the HLS-8 .I also wanted to keep the original look of the HLS.Wanting to keep the look was a little problematic because of the way the original HLS horn integrates with the grill.Also the orginal horn hole was larger than the mini S wave guide.I had to make a 2 layer piece one to glue on the inside of the enclosure and one to fit on top of it to fit the existing hole so the new waveguide could lay flush (if any of that makes sense :-) should've taken pics of this process) Then I Dremeled the Old horns so they would fit around the new waveguides but still retain the look of the original speakers.Okay,that's it,my longest post ever. lol , thanks so much to all who have contributed to this along the way.

Thanks! Mine are almost done. I have been screwing around/up trying to get the teak oil finish right, I have always struggled with finish. I decided no polyurethane, didn't like that coated look on test pieces. I MAY have them up and playing today (jinx!). Here's a pic from a few weeks ago without finish, next to my wife's Advents which they are replacing...

EconoWaves Done!

Finally, my EconoWaves are done. They came out better looking than I hoped, even the wife says they are pretty (but big!). I tried to minimize their apparent size by making them fit on the fireplace hearth and not taller than the fireplace screen.

I used the Selenium D220Ti on the Pyle PH612 waveguide, with a Dayton 15" PA380-8 pro woofer, and the generic >95dB Jack Giff crossover. The box is 1.6cf tuned to 48Hz, 3/4" plywood double layered on sides and back. I used some leftover carpet scraps to line the boxes, which worked really well. 2-ply teak veneer from http://www.veneersupplies.com/ with several coats of Watco teak oil worked in with bronze wool. I should have the grills finished soon. If I can stop listening to them! :music:

They sound wonderful, everything I hoped for - dynamic, clear, effortless, loud, DYNAMIC! I owe Zilch and Jack Giff and everyone here that contributed, a big thanks. I started these as a JBL L200 clone with a modern twist, and later saw that Zilch had done the same thing a few years ago, so I hoped he would have a unique appreciation for these, but I was too slow completing them for him to see. I never met him but the small portion I have seen is a legacy to be proud of! :thmbsp:

Ok, we'll start with these Altec Model 14 Woofers....

They could with equal accuracy be called "9842 woofers."* Other than that, they are known by their Altec part number: 034633. There is no 'model name/number,' they were never sold stand-alone, and no published T/S parameters exist. But the published specs of the Model 14 and 9842 systems indicate they go down to 35 or 40 hz and were crossed-over at 1500 to 1700 hz.** It therefore seems to me they could form the basis of killer e-Waves. And I know a guy who wants to sell some, so I've spent that past couple of days reading about everyting I could find about them....

So, if one had such woofers, how might one proceed? Build a box about the size that Altec put them in? That would be, based on published external dimensions and material thickness, about 4.2 cu.ft., in the case of the 9842. There’s even a blueprint for a 9842 cabinet online. (Duplicating the Model 14 cab, of course, would be a lot more work. Internal volume is similar at about 4.08 cu ft.)

Now, about the crossover. I take it the e-Wave crossover would need to be customized a little for this particular woofer and cabinet? Forgive me, I must ask a very revealing question. Just how might one do that?

At least the ‘tuning the box’ part is solved by having the original dimensions and vent size, right? I might like to build it taller and narrower though, while holding to the specified volume. Any reason that wouldn’t work? BTW, does the woofer go on top, or does the waveguide go on top? I seem to see it both ways.

So, while I am keen to take these woofers and build killer e-Waves with them, I'm also a bit at sea here, mainly with regard to the crossover. Am I encouraged to dive in?


* Also used in later Model 15s apparently—saw a pic of a pull from a 15 that looked the same. Other Model 15’s used a woofer with a stamped basket, generally thought inferior.

Zilch and I picked up a Model 14 for measurement and testing purposes but unfortunately didn't get too far into modification. There may be some unpublished frequency response charts at the Zilchlab on the HF Mantaray horn and driver. Not sure about the woofer. We had the whole thing apart and were talking about how easy it would be to build these cabinets. I was skeptical.

Zilch said the Mantaray was a flawed design and that the stock Econowave easily out performed it. Based on that info I'd say dive right in. The cabinet volume will make great bass with the right driver and the HF can be fixed if you could somehow flush mount a stock econowaveguide in place of the Mantaray. Sell the Mantaray to fund your project:thmbsp:

Can anyone answer his questions about the existing woofer? I'm at work.
 
Zilch would invert the speaker to put the waveguide in alignment with the measuring microphone. Woofer on bottom, waveguide on top for normal listening 'on axis'.

You know, I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water here. That Model 14 crossover might not be all that bad... especially considering all the work Zilch was doing with the Model 19.
