Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I'm sure Zilch is both cheering you on, and chastising you at the same time. "How are you gonna toe those in, you numbskull!"

Quick question on HF polarity on the standard Ewave...

Does the + terminal on the crossover board connect to the + side on the Selenium or is it inverted?

Someone please correct me but I believe that the HF polarity is correct on the standard Ewave PCB but that the LF polarity was wrong if you're using certain JBL woofers such as the D123A. Can anyone corroborate this vague memory of mine?

I am looking at the V 1.1 circuit board documentation and the standard implementation shows HF is reversed. Zilch says that for driver connections, "polarities are correct per the schematic assuming the drivers [woofer] are themselves 'positive polarity'..."
One notable JBL exception is the LE-14A woofer.

I have some boards here, so I will pull them out to check the silkscreen designations. for polarity.

The circuit board shows LPad 2 trace connects to HF+, as per the schematic.
So if you have the v. 1.1 circuit boards, wire it by observing the polarity markings on the silkscreen. If you are building your own point to point, LPad 2 goes to HF (Selenium) +. That would invert the HF polarity compared to the input. Hope that helps.

Can someone help me out here? I started from page 1 on this thread, got about 15 pages in and realized there are 921 pages! So some questions:

1) what's the best page to start with that has the most up to date, recent instructions for ewaving a JBL L55 keeping the LE14as?

2) what's the best page to start with to figure out box dimensions (want to rebuild the JBLs)

3) any significant bullet points to give me right now to save me 3 or 4 hours of reading?

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place/way to do this. Constructive criticism welcom.

spicynuts, I don't think anyone went any further with the LE14a than jackgiff, and he posted his crossover on the top of page 13, the L55 box size is just fine. Start reading from the project summary (linked to from post 1). The techtalk "flex your pcd mettle" shows the design process more clearly.

es!

Just got the rest of the parts ordered up. (been sitting on the pcbs for a while.) The fun begins! JBL D130Fs + Ewave=?????

I used a 6X6 waveguide with some modified D130's. (6X6 uses the standard EWave crossover, same as the 6X12) Make sure you use the >95dB crossover for the HF. The LF on mine is standard, but I have paper dust caps on my 130's. This tames the mids from the woofer. You may find that the standard LF crossover is not low enough with aluminum dust caps. In that case, take a look at the LE14A variant that is being discussed currently.

@4343 Great to hear someone has had some success with the D130+ ewave. Now I don't have to keep questioning my decision to try this route with them. :)

I've been running mine full range for several months now and although I really like them, I can't escape the fact that the high end is really needing help. I think I'll add a sub in the mix after the ewaving too. Thanks for the motivation!

The "flex your mettle" thread shows later crossover developement using PCD.
It resulted in a better, simpler crossover that did away with the cap and resistor compensation for a lower parts count crossover that had the compensation spot on. I dont think the LE14 was ever subjected to this scrutiny, nor was the JBL 2235H. I purchased a mic, downloaded PCD, but when Zilch's health failed so did my info line. I think it would be fitting to get members here up to speed on PCD, and the e'wave project. The Flex your mettle thread certainly has the Zilch method cold on several versions of E'wave.

Anyone have such an ability with PCD? I'm starting to stare at the parts again...

Not done but very close. MDF 28mm. Deltalite 2512 in 4cft and d220ti+Pyle wg. Wooden panels tinted red with rounded edges will be on the sides of the box when it is finished. Front, rear, up and down side of the box will be flat black. C/C distance calculated Wayne Parham way :) Here's some porn :)

Awesome, love the pics. Actually, I love the white baffle; though I know you are painting flat black.
