Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I think the guy knows what he is doing. Maybe his standard is megabuck audio. Called the highs an mids smeared.

Might be like those who think ST 70s are sorely lacking whereas I really like them.

He did say all you need to do is please yourself and if he told half the customers the mods they wanted to do to their equipment would have no audible effect, he would be out of business.
 
I have a pair of econowaves that I built using a pair of JBL L55 cabinets, with QSC waveguides on top of the cabinets and LE14A and Selenium drivers. They can be seen at the link below:

I recently picked up a new pair of cabinets that would allow the waveguides to be mounted inside the cabinets. The volume of the L55 cabinets is approximately 2.0 cubic feet, and the new new cabinets are approximately 2.7 cubic feet.

My question is this: I am assuming that I can keep the crossover unmodified, and the only thing I will have to do other than making the drivers fit is to properly tune the cabinets for the LE14A. Is this correct, or will crossover modifications be needed?

Also, is there a reason not to use the LE14A in a 2.7 cubic foot cabinet?

You're good to go. Looks like you have the woofer and waveguide in a position where they will sit flat against a baffle, so there won't be any change when you actually mount them on one. Plus you will be able to snug the waveguide right up against the flat part of the LE14 squircle.

I don't know about the box tuning for that driver.

Certainly not. Also, since you will now be subtracting the volume of the waveguide and compression driver from the cab. volume, your actual volume difference is going to be very small. You shouldn't even need to change the port (the one you have in the current cabinets, I mean) if you like the current bass response.

I guess it's a matter of taste, but I've Ewaved 3 pairs of large Advents and I can't imagine going back. The waveguide top end might not be what everyone wants but it was so much better than the fried egg there's no comparison. Considering how cheaply Advents can be had, I'll keep doing it.

I recall one person on this thread a couple of years ago who built up a good pair and decided he didn't like them. He parted them out and moved on.

I've had a lot of fancy speakers here in the last few years. The Linn Isobarik DMS got sold and I'm still listening to Ewaves.

Hi,
If you look back early in this thread and its predecessors, you'll see mostly trial, measurement and more experimentation. You can look at Wayne Parham's compensation values chart, if you know how much attenuation you need. But that's a little different from the Econowave because it does not use an L-Pad.

Hi all,

I have followed every post from the beginning and am now ready to start.

I intend building a pair of Econowave Delite 10,s as per P/Express TechTalk forum. It uses the Eminence Deltalite II 2510

Modelling this driver in WinISD suggests about 50LT ( 1.8 cu. ft. ) with an f3 about 50Hz.

Has anyone heard this speaker and can comment on its bass performance. I am concerned that without subs ( to be added much later ) the sound may be somewhat thin and ultimately dissapointing.

If someone can recommend an alternate 10" driver I would be interested, particularly if it costs about the same or less than the Eminence. Unfortunately space constraints preclude using a 12"

I am pretty sure you'll want subs. You could get some bass in an oversized box tuned to 50Hz, but that'll take your power handling down to around 10W. Still loud enough for most people, given the efficiency, but kind of a waste of these relatively expensive pro drivers.

You're going to have to give up a lot of efficiency to find a 10" with bass that plays nice high enough for this, I think. Seas A26RE4 and CA26RFX would both probably work. Neither is going to work on the crossover designed for the Eminence, though.
 
I think you'd might want to go with subs for other reasons, too. Subs are ultra-sensitive to room placement and the best placement is almost never the same as the best placement for the mains. Try and do low bass from the same cabinet as the horns and odds are the bass will suck. Cross over around 80Hz and put the subs where they work best. (subs being plural, BTW, at least two placed differently to get some advantage over room modes)

x2. even two or three average subs properly integrated should yield a better result than a single sub.
 
About 6 months ago a friend needed some PA speakers. He had some very nice 18Sound 12" drivers. ( 12W500 I think ) I added the standard JBL W/guide and Selenium tweeter. He was very happy with the result but it was not untill I hooked up a decent source and amp that I realised how good they were.

WinISD showed an f3 of 46Hz for his 12", and f3 of 50Hz for the 10" I am considering.

I think that 4Hz should not be too noticeable so I am going ahead with this project and will start ordering parts. I understand and have heard multiple subs and they will be added at a later stage.

The Eminence Deltalite II 2510 has an Xmax of 4.2mm. Can anybody tell me at what power Xmax will be reached. My WinISD program models the response but I can't get info on max power nor max SPL I just get a blank page. What am I doing wrong.
 
I built a pair of standard econowaves in old Pioneer cabs, crossover as posted in the PE Tech Talk thread. Great sound.

Those look pretty, djginwis.

Wish we still had someone handing out official ewaver numbers as when Zilch was here.
