Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

Zilch would the CS63 cabs be a good match for the 123A woofers out of the L100's? I'm talking sealed cab application.
I'd have to know the interior dimensions to model them precisely. I've never used them in a large box.

Do this: Pull a woofer and determine the impedance. Also measure the internal dimensions of the box, so you know where you are. Build the appropriate E'Wave for the 15s and see how they work. If they don't play the mids worth a whit, do something else for the woofer.

At some point, rubber's gotta hit the road, and E'Wave's nothing if not flexible.

Yes, flexible it does seem to prove to be for sure! The CS63 is a big cab and 1" thick veneered plywood construction. So interior volume should be about 4 cu ft or a bit more or less. They weigh 58 lbs with drivers. Solid cabs to be sure. I'm thinking I might go ahead and pick up the econowave parts and try them with the CS63 15" driver. Perhaps I might contribute something new if it hasn't been tried yet. I'm still a bit daft on this stuff even after all the time reading through the post......but I love it just the same. Cool stuff guys!
 
JBL charged my credit card last Friday so I should have the waveguides this week sometimes :banana:. Will report my finding with picts next week sometimes.

Mean time, if someone can help me tuning my cabinet for Altec 414Z, I would greatly appreciate it much. Dimension of cabinets is 40" H x 25" W x 18" D which came out to about 9 cubic feet internal.

Eff:2.9% and XMax:0.15in . My 414z is 16ohm older version but I think specs should be the same as this specs from http://alteclansingunofficial.nlenet.net/Thiele-Small.html

Whoops! Didn't realize another AK'er wanted them. Sorry about that. But they really do look pretty clean, don't they?

These will go into the Altec Seville cabinets that were given to me by Mr Widget a few months ago. Zilch stored them for me till we could get to Berkeley and pick them up. Got some really nice veneer picked out for them, too.
 
I thought at least a 3 cubic foot box was recommended for the the 123a sealed box enclosure application. Was this this the optimum figure for the driver? Or the minimum volume? I can always alter the inside to make it smaller if needed.
 
Hi All, I have a thought and need to get your opinions.

I am bi-amping my ESS Ewaves and built the crossover for the low sensitivity woofer. The highpass section is really reducing the volume on the ewave so, would it give me more volume if I built the highpass section for the high eff woofer.. That would be using 1.5mf vs .47 for C3, 15 ohms vs 32 ohms for R1, and 24 ohms vs 16 ohms for R2? These are really sound way beyond my expectations but I could use more volume out of my horn section. Cheers.
 
Hrmm...if you are biamping, I'd suspect you'd want to just strip out the L-Pad section entirely. You'd have the components used for the crossover (cap/coil) and the compensation section of the crossover.
 
Hey D, I do not have the L-pads in my crossovers. The issue I have is the 300B is only putting out around 9wpc and the crossover takes that down lower so with the 300B up all the way, the Adcom is only at 1/4 power. I want to let more of the 300B power to come through.

Yes. The compensation components for the low-sensitivity version attenuate E'Wave ~5 dB. Only about 1/3 of your amp output is actually getting to the compression driver.... :yes:
 
SO Z, if I go with the high eff version, more of my amp power will come through, can I use other components in the crossover to get even more power to come through and still remain flat across the spectrum? Cheers.

No, basically, not with E'Wave's compensation scheme.

If we measured the sensitivity, I believe we'd find that E'Wave is behaving like a 100+ dB sensitivity tweeter.... :yes:
 
OK, thanks. I will go with the high eff version. That should work well. The bass is really flabby when I turn to volume up but the passive radiators I just installed did not have the piece of wood glued on the back. I weighed the piece of wood I found in the bottom of one cab and it wieghs as much as for quarters, so I glued four quarters on the back of each PR. That should help. On one side I put them all face up and the other side all face down....wonder if there is be a difference ;>)

I would agree that's probably pretty close, after messing with Andy's and the Altects I'd say 97ish,
If you wanted to tweak I'd gather to guess you might be able to squeeeeze 99 from them with comp.

My speakers were 97 db., close enough I first tried the <95 db. Kind of had the same results you're talking about. Switching to the >95 db crossover solved the problem nicely.
