Avid 105 speakers?

Blackstone

Active Member
I've just picked up a pair of Avid 102's. I've searched and found info on models 100, 102, and 103. Anyone know anything about Avid 105 speakers? Some are available in my area, but I haven't seen pictures yet.

Thanks.

Avid 105's...need advice

About four months ago, i came across an ad on craigslist. My main search when looking for gear info is always Audiokarma. i was stumped that no one on this forum could provide any info on these. I would think the web would give valuable info & pics...I found nothing! i couldn't believe these things were so extinct...and i had some in my area.

So driving home after work, i dreaded going on the hunt. But i've been riding pretty good luck...i'll have to tell you some of my other stories some other time. So i arrive and think i'm just to see another common box...well, this thing looks more like an over-sized end table...so here she is...

Wish you had rotated those pics before posting them, are those 12" woofers ? How do they sound ? Im guessing they are heavy if their anything like their smaller models
they should be good speakers. Have you replaced the caps yet ? I restored a set of 102s
and the difference was something else, they have some of smoothest mids of any speaker I have owned. WAF factor is pretty low though.

Sorry about the pics...i'll try to fix that later. You are right about the weight..they are heavy and not only that but solid...very thick on all sides. They sound fantastic...the 12in. woofer goes pretty low and it compliments the mid & super tweeter (or at least it looks like a super tweeter). I just realized that I forgot to post the two very small imaging tweeters...one on each side...this makes these things so sweet. I'll keep updating this thread in the coming week so stay tuned :D

Avid 105 Woofer

So here are some pics of the 12in. woofer...I was also able to capture some of the numbers in order to archive these part numbers...perhaps someone here can identify the maker/supplier...hard to believe that the rubber surrounds have held up for so long...:D

Avid 105 Mids

So now to the midrange...upon further inspection, I noticed a tear on the foam...in reality, I thought the surrounds looked old and seemed brittle...

I picked up a pair of speakers at a yard sale this summer...the name plate on the back informed me that they were...Avid Model 105.

Never having seen an Avid 105 before, it wasn't until later that I realized they were imposters!

Apparently, some clever person took the woofer, mid, 2 side tweeters from an Avid 105, replaced the original tweeter with a Peerless (?), put the mid/high adjustments and fuse on the back and put it all in very nice AR type cabinet! They are also mirror-imaged.

Thanks for all the great info and pics!

I may be wrong but going from info I received on my 102s it looks like your Woofers are from the 10th week of 76, another thing of note is CTS made the woofers for my 102s.
Well according to the code sheet page Here it looks your Woofers are made by Rola as the first three
numbers are 285, the last 4 numbers are the date code 7610. 76 being the year and 10 being the week. They could have very well used different sources for their drivers. Especially since yours are bigger.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys...I have to keep pinching myself when I think of how old these things are...How about that midrange. What's the benefit of having the driver enclosed like that. Since I'm a newbie on drivers, is the design common or unique? By the same token, why Denmark? What big companies were there and why not use a U.S. manufacturer?

Sorry for all the questions...just very curious :D

:D
Again I may be wrong but having the mids enclosed would keep them from having to design the cabs with a separate enclosure and allow for more cubic ft
of cab for those 12" Woofers, Im guessing any backwaves from another driver would not work well with the woofer on that cab design.

Squaquers are Peerles, tweeters posibly too. These squakers were used by many well known speaker "manufacturers" in the '70s and '80s including some from Onkyo per ex. In my opinion they are exelent (I made a few projects with these). Replacing the foam surround is not easy , they are inverted, try to find advice. Luck !

thanks guys,

That makes sense...now to carefully re-foam them. Wonder of any other Avids used the same mid...

Nice pics Noreaster...glad to see those woofers being put to good use.

Imaging tweets mis-firing

I do have a problem with one pair having to do with the imaging tweets. This particular speaker has a much lower volume than the other...I found another member having the same problem with his and traced it down to the fuse not making contact.

So how do I get to the fuse? :scratch2:

Its behind that Button that says press in the last pic you posted, be carefull those have been known to break easily. You bypass those fuses if you want. Push in and down slightly and that button pops out with fuse.
