I picked up a pair of Avid 103 speakers today. They sound pretty good to my ears. Anyone else using Avid speakers?

i have a set i got at estate sale about a year ago, love them. i use them i the office hooked up to a h/k 630. nice sound. i believe you will enjoy them. made in providence,r.i.

No, but I remember them quite "avid"ly when they first came out with a lot of fanfare. Pics please!

I have a pair of 102's -- the two-way little brothers of the 103's. Both use the Philips polycarbonate dome tweeter. Nice tweeter.

OK here's some pictures. Finally figured out the attachment upload.

I have a pair of 103's. Currently they're stacked with a pair of AR-4x's and powered by a Pioneer SX-650. Unbelievably good sound from this combo. Just my opinion, mind you.

I lightened one of the photos up a bit so that the drivers could be seen better. The tweeter is of course the Philips. I wonder if the pincushion basket MR is CTS-made? The MR surround is rubber?

I assume that the woofer is the same as the one in the 102 (10" rubber surround)?

The woofers in mine were made by Rola and have a rubber surround. The midrange is made by Heppner and has a cloth surround. Although, I have examples of virtually the same driver made by CTS and Rola, as well. The tweeters in mine are the later (I assume) plastic faced Philips ones. I'd assume the 102/103 woofers are the same. They sure look it. Wanna compare numbers?

Would you (lico) be offended if I start another AVID thread to collect photos and info on these not-terribly-common "East Coast" speakers?

No problem. I'll try to post some better pictures if you start another thread. The woofers in mine have rubber surrounds. I just noticed my set is not a matched set of serial numbers.

I have had a couple pair of the Avids- I like the sound and driver selection- just wished they had used real wood cabs!

I have a pair of AVID 100's....with bright red grill cloths!
8" CTS woofer & CTS phenolic ring tweeter.
Sounds great driven by an H-K 450 receiver!

I have a pair of Avid 100's, and I like 'em. They are in a bedroom, driven by an Onkyo TX-41, and provide sound for DVD's with a small TV.

High Fidelity was effusive in its praise for the Avid 100,. claiming it would be a status quo shaker. Unfortunately, that never happened, but they're still nice speakers.

I've a pair of 103's - sound great but pretty ratty cosmetically. I think they sound somewhat better than the Original Advents I have but that could be the aging crossovers.

Got them for $20 off eBay and local pickup.

Thought I'd post again about my Avid 103s. I have been listening these guys for about a week now on and off, spinning some vinyl. Have them hooked up to a Pioneer SX-1050. The Philips dome tweeter is pretty special, the highs are these guys are excellent, very accurate to my ears anyway. Think I might like these better than my Infiniity Qes with the EMIT tweeters.

But alas... now that I am fully caught up in this vintage audio craze (somebody save me!), I'm wondering about other speakers that would have a similar sound from the same era, but with higher end real wood cabinets which can be refinished, etc.

Actually the Philips 477 might be worth considering. Same tweeter, Philips dome MR and a big woofer. There was a very recent thread here on those.

The Polks of that era also featured Contact Paper "veneer", unfortunately. :-(

EPI's premiere "Epicure" line were veneer instad of vinyl. You'd probably like those too. www.humanspeakers.com

The Teledyne AR's of the same era (and, of course, the earlier, classic AR's) had nice cabinets. A pair of Teledyne AR-11's would probably suit you fine.

Here's a few pics of my Avid 110s. Just want to make sure that we're all talking about the same Avid 110 model here... and that I'm not mis-reading the model number on mine (the tag is sort of illegible, as if someone with bad handwriting, kind of like mine :D , wrote it originally).

The bass in these is well damped... which could be interpreted by some as "weak", compared to the overly boomy, underdamped bass of some other speakers of its size, IMHO. When placed about 6" from a wall, they have PLENTY of low end... and seem to go lower than most speakers of their size...

Regards,
Gordon.
