2017 Sansui Serial Number Database

I know, you pointed this out before. I just pride myself in submitting clean harvests and in the process keep track of my finds in my own local spreadsheet. Now at an astonishing 7158 serialz. I dunno, the exercise calms me down in this f@#ked-up world.
Happy to provide a task that provides relief of any kind! :)

All are japanese 100V versions.

821071089,AU-D607F,pfffz
822091188,AU-D607F Extra,pfffz

219040727 has spring clip speaker terminals, knobs are all metal and held by screws.
The rest have screw/turning type speaker terminals, knobs (except volume) have inner plastic.

@LBPete: is this something for your Unicorn-search? A G-401 that is currently on ebay with 220V/240V only?
I can't read the 5th digit all to good. I assume:

G-401,829030120,ebay.uk,220V/240V exclusively as it looks like and "3" is hard to read

That's quite a collection! 727 is the oldest of the group, built in April '79. We have 118 AU-D607s on file. I'll tag a note to 727 indicating the type of knobs and binding posts and a note on 50130 indicating the production change. Thanks for posting that detail. It's nice to catalog this type of production change.

If you post more serial numbers please use this format: Model,Serial Number,Reporter,Notes,T-tag. For example: AU-D607,219040727,pfffz,JDM. spring clip speaker terminals. knobs are all metal and held by screws

JDM, indicates a Japanese domestic model. When I upload the serial numbers into Excel, commas tell the program to skip to the next field so don't put commas in a note. You can use a period to separate names or concepts.

A T-tag indicates the unit was built by a contractor. It will appear as a T in a circle on the ID plate. Sometimes it's followed by the name of the contractor, please include that as well.

@peterott, YES, that's a Unicorn! Is the faceplate a color other than silver? By 1979 when this unit was built, regulations for electronic devices were changing and Multi Voltage inputs were no longer acceptable. We have a number of G-401s built in 1979 on file but unfortunately none indicate the input voltage.

Thanks for posting.

Here are the stats from the August batch: 301 posted resulting in 285 serial numbers added to the database. There were 2 production duplicates and 2 new models including a very rare MD-R7 MIDI Tape Synchronizer/Controller. Had to add a whole new category for this one

You may recall the CD-X310 that fell out of July batch. After you all pointed out that photos were posted, I added them into the August batch. I got distracted a couple of times yesterday when processing the August batch and when they fell out again I set them aside. It wasn't until this morning I remembered there were photos so I've added them to the September batch with a note. I'll get them in sooner or later. :boring:

It's a silver faceplate for that G-401.

Oh well, my two CD-X310s :yikes::biggrin:

TL;DR
@LBPete , apologies for the mistake, i read the instructions but mixed the model and SN locations.
Thank you for letting me know, i was not aware at all of the differences on back labels.
I often browse Yahoo auctions to find a cheap unit for my next project, i will try to post some serial numbers from there as well.

I checked my units for the "T" tag, I live in japan and this "T" usually means location or zip code here,it is very often used at the beginning of the zip code number when writing a living address or can be found on any mailed envelope or post box, my units all say "サンスイ” which means "Sansui". (”山水” and "さんすい" are other ways to write Sansui but in different scenarios, 山水 seems to be used as the official company registered name on the label).

I searched the forum for an example where something else comes after the "T" tag and found one saying "AZUMI", Google's Gemini search results attached below (a little long but thought it might be an interesting read), to my understanding this this "T" tag could mean location of manufacturing as in specifying a factory name/location.

AZUMI was a direct part of Sansui itself , operating as an in-house manufacturing subsidiary rather than an independent third-party contractor.
, Azumi Sansui (AZumi Sansui) was a fully owned, dedicated production branch of Sansui Electric Co., Ltd. Located specifically in the scenic Azumi region of Nagano Prefecture, its setup served a distinct purpose in Sansui's operations: [1]

⚙️ Why Sansui Built the Azumi Factory
  • The "Hand-Made" Luxury Division: While Sansui's mass-market products were manufactured at their larger corporate plants (such as the main Tokyo or Gunma facilities), the Azumi facility was built specifically for boutique, high-end production .
  • The Pride of the Brand: Think of Azumi as Sansui's premium craftsmanship studio. The factory was staffed with highly experienced local technicians and craftsmen who assembled top-tier units—like the iconic AU-D907X Decade —entirely by hand.
  • Quality Isolation: By keeping the assembly of flagship Hi-Fi models isolated in Azumi, Sansui could enforce incredibly rigorous quality testing and internal wiring standards that were impossible on a standard, rapid mass-production assembly line.

How to Tell If It's an "Azumi Unit"
Audiophiles often check the rear or inside of vintage Sansui gear for validation. A unit born out of this specific factory will usually display one of the following:
  1. "AZUMI" stamped directly in white or yellow ink onto the green internal circuit boards.
  2. "Sansui Electric Co., Ltd. Azumi Factory" is printed on the master specification plate on the back of the chassis. In short, it wasn't an outsourced contractor. When you see "AZUMI" on a piece of Sansui equipment, it signifies that the unit was built at Sansui's own elite domestic facility during the peak era of Japanese audio engineering

I also checked my units for other differences, i noticed the F-2997 board (i think this is Phono MC related) on unit "820071627", has a large number of electrolytics compared to my other two units, attaching photos of "820071627" compared to "229050130".

@peterott, Thanks!

@pfffz, good information on the T-tag, thanks! I've been cataloging the T-tag when it's reported with a serial number. In many cases there is no other identification with it. We have almost 7,500 units with T-tags on file. Very common on some turntables, receivers and tape decks.

Sansui is famous for making running changes during production. In most cases, these changes are not documented, at least not documented to Distributors. Do the two boards in the photos have different board numbers? That would make it easier to catalog.

- Pete

@LBPete , the boards have the same number written on them F-2997, they are installed on the right side, between the front of the chassis and the EQ board F-2910, right next to it.

I could not find any documentation of this board in the manual, both schematic and top-side PCB layout sections don't show it.
unfortunately I don't have the original manual, so I have been using the AU-519's one.

If you think of other information that would be useful, I would be happy to take another look, I'm about to start a recap and it is easily accessible.

Is the board in the photo the newer one? Does the board in the older unit have the 2 next to the board number? Sansui would sometimes add a letter or number when revising a board.

- Pete

Thanks for checking. I'll add that detail to the note attached to the serial numbers.

AU-D607,219040727,pfffz,1st generation F-2997 board. spring clip terminals. knobs with screws
AU-D607,229050130,pfffz,2nd generation F-2997 board. screw terminals. push on knobs

I'm not clear on which ones have a T-tag.
