The C-2301 is a good example of Sansui's inconsistent naming protocols. The terms like Vintage or Extra are on the faceplate but sometimes are not on the ID plate. When I put in a new model I always go by the ID plate which is why I search out images of the new model that show the ID plate. Models that have been in the database for awhile I stay with the "popular" name unless I have good data to justify changing it.

We have 66 C-2301s in the database. They are all identified in the Database as Vintage. Looking at the production data, they were produced from March '84 to August '87. During that time 3 different production lines were used. It's completely possible that "Vintage" was added to the ID plate at some point, probably when a shift to a new production line occurred. Generally this shift would also correspond with some level of revision.

The SN in the photo is from March '84, the first month of production. The other one I see, 215020025 was built on the same production line a year later and not identified as "Vintage". Do you know if it had "Vintage" on the ID plate?

A quick internet search turned up a listing in the Audio Database, generally a good source of information. It calls it the C-2301 Vintage but an image of the back panel shows the ID plate without "Vintage." If we can find an image of the ID that includes Vintage and the Serial number produced on a different production line, I could separate Vintage models from models that don't have Vintage on the ID plate.

The SR-212 ill list as 414 with a note that the third digit is obscured.

As long as the second digit is visible, we can assume the first digit is an 8. I'm going to process this month's serial numbers on Monday.

@PE9ZZ, I appreciate you purging duplicates. I have a robust technique for finding duplicates in the posted serial numbers so you don't need to spend a lot of time doing it.

I know, you pointed this out before. I just pride myself in submitting clean harvests and in the process keep track of my finds in my own local spreadsheet. Now at an astonishing 7158 serialz. I dunno, the exercise calms me down in this f@#ked-up world.
