First off you have what appears to be co-polymer cones. That was a response to humidity and the paper cones absorbing moisture and changing the sound. Great idea but the added weight dulled the transients. You can't go wrong with ADS so rest assured they will sound better than most.

I've been thinking adding 1290s next to my JBL 580 current system for dedicated 2 channel configuration..
Using Realistic LAB400 tt as source
Q. What might be the sound difference I might expect?

Hello everyone,
I'm new & chiming in with a question...
I used to sell ADS speakers & home/ car audio electronics. I only stocked a few pairs of home speakers, up to the 1590's.
I recently came across a pair of "excellent" condition L1230's w/ just rebuilt crossovers for $1000.00 for the pair.
How does that pricing look to you all? I'm not up to speed on used values & a Fleabay search yielded nothing.
They be on a Mac set-up, A/D/S separates, or a Pioneer SX-1250 receiver in a 30'x14'x7.5' dedicated music room.
Let's start there, what say you folks?

I see you joined today and this is your first post so first of all welcome aboard and here's hoping you enjoy your stay.
The intent of this thread was meant to be more of a compendium of info on the various models of ADS speakers.
There is a dedicated section here on AK for ALL questions with regards to pricing, cost etc.
Create a new thread there with a title such as "ADS L1230 pricing advice" or something of that nature. There will plenty of ADS knowledgeable folks who can assist you with your question

I just acquired a CC4, PA4, CD4, & RC1 remote control....
All are like new condition, original boxes & packing, Din to RCA connectors, back cable hiding panels, owner's manuals, & technical service manuals.
Despite what I'm reading here, they all seem to be solidly built & they sell quickly on Fleabay & other sites...

Hi Soundmotor,Well, my only defense is I noted "IIRC". It's my only defense these days. Depends can't be too far off either!I'd guess then that it was a 206-0332 not 0322 in the 810/1230. Until I can dig out my list though, that too is IIRC.
On Atelier, I've had a couple stacks over the years & few pieces left now. I wouldn't recommend any of them on a performance basis except the PA4 amplifier, T2 tuner, and C4 & C23 cassette decks. The PA4 was a beast for its size & not a bad amp overall. Think Hafler DH-150 if they made such a thing. The T2 was a pretty fair tuner as well. The C4 was in the same league as the Nak BX300 but not quite CR-7A. Using TDK MA tape, you could dupe a record that sounded better than the same CD pressing of the time. If you are just looking for the cool factor, Atelier is just like B & O of the same period. Long on looks, short on performance.
The problem with the CD players is that they do not have a digital out so you are stuck with the ancient D/As that is if the laser isn't dead or dying. The R4/CC4; nightmares when they broke which was often until ADS changed vendors. The A2 has great ergonomics but is compromised from a sound quality standpoint. I'd have to look at the schematic but I think there might be STKs in there somewhere. The C2 & C3 decks aren't worth mentioning. The R1 receiver kinda neat. The RC1 remote that controls everything is usually broken.
The gear is really cool from a design standpoint & I would not hesitate to buy it right. I got a near mint CD3 at a yard sale that way. Braun sold identical but renamed models in Europe and had many other models not imported to the US like the CD5 (had digital out), VC4 (HiFi VCR), a TV, & the C22 which was identical to the C23 except for the model number on the US unit.

My RC1 thankfully is not broken & like new.
What on the CD players & CC4 usually break, when did they switch vendors (all my gear is 1986 made), & if something breaks, do you have a source who is good at servicing these?
Thanks for your input, it brings back memories. Do you have an opinion how ADS / Braun got it right on speakers, but not on the electronics as you stated?

How did I miss this thread? My ADS experience is with the following models, sorted in order of my preference.
L1530 - recently purchased from a fine fellow in Grants Pass Oregon. Simply amazing. Yamaha M-85 powering these beauties.
L1090 - even more recently purchased in Albany Oregon. Doing fine service as my home theater front speakers. Denon X4300h doing the lifting here.
L710 - original drivers, crossovers, and owner, my college speakers, still providing excellent playback in my garage system. Powered by a newish Yamaha A-S501.
L780/2 - also acquired locally earlier this year. My least liked of the four pair mainly due to a suspected woofer issue. Powered by a Carver Receiver 2000.
A question for the group: does anyone have the specifications for the L1090/2's? I've searched this fine site and elsewhere with no data. I'm particularly interested in the frequency response curve.

Yes ... actually it's the third set I've seen. It's part of the "Movie/Video line as in the name MV15 series which if memory serves me was manufactured by Definitive Technology when they bought ADS. How do the L1090s compare to the others? Also, I’m in WA and curious if you have seen any 810, 910, 1290 down in OR, recently. Also, prices seem to be getting high, which given the age and paucity of parts makes these speakers much less attractive than for others here who purchased at bargain basement prices several years ago.

I owned a pair of L1090’s and liked them a lot. Not the bass of the 1290 or 1590 but nicely balanced and not nearly as large as the others. I’ve owned 420, early 710’s - my favorite, later 810’s, 980’s and 1090’s plus a couple other pairs that I’ve forgotten. They all sound nice.

I couldn't help but notice your pairing of the L710 with a Yamaha A-S501. I recently purchased a Yamaha A-S801 and have it driving my pair of
ADS L730 speakers right now. And I must say it is a very sweet match. That amp really makes my L730's sing. I had the L710's here for awhile as well and
they are a fantastic speaker. Must sound incredible with that A-S501.
My A-S801 is my first venture into modern gear. All my other stuff is vintage. Without giving modern pieces a try I was blindly in the camp of "they don't build 'em like they used to".....lol. But this modern Yamaha sounds better than my vintage pieces, even my separates. I can't deny that.
I want to pair it with my stacked Original Large Advents and see how that sounds.....but my L730's sound so good with it I haven't been able to bring
myself to unhook them !
