A somewhat rare find..

The Power transformer is fine, there was pnly damage to some passive elements in the power section, and a certain fet, and some chips in the tuner. Ofcourse quite a few electrolytics which were off spec..

Absolutely sensational piece of audio design...love it...
I m into cars as well and recently "scored" some "car styling" magazines...most ranging from late 70s to mid 80s...
So...guess what I see on page 90 of issue 49 (1985 winter quarterly)...
yep its a pic of the 'setton'

Says it won the French Industrial award in 1978...

You can probably get a years' knobber pass out of TVK if you send that to him for a high res scan.

That is very nice! There is almost zero info to be found about this unit! Does the article says any more about the whereabouts etc?

p.s. I might have found a source for the missing knob.:thmbsp:

more pics!

Enjoy!

The Setton sounds surprislingly sweet! I have connected it to the poweramp of my SX-5590 and a pair of HPM-110's for the moment.

looks sweet i just picked up a lafayette lr-3030 reciever at the salvation army for 5 bucks. i geuss it was a setton made reciever has guts of a setton and the board numbers of settons. it was hardly used. i deoxed all the switches and it sounds sweet.

It should actually be the other way around.. the Setton RS recievers (at least the RS-660) is based on Lafayette technology...

found that the RS-220 looks like mine alot except they used different output transistors. Mine has the flat pack type s-40 type from sanken. Inside and chassis i mean the front panel on the setton 220 is of course different.

Some more pics while it is waiting for a new FM-preset button to arrive:

As you can see, I took off one extra button.., that one will be used f0r replication. Getting it anodized in the right color might be tricky, but I'm sure things will turn out just fine.:thmbsp:

^^ yes indeed, it certainly has a kind of "Star Trek" design to it. But even better.

Wow, I'm blown away by this design. What a phenomenal find. :thmbsp: Where on Earth did you manage to source it?

I found it in Paris about 4 months ago.. It popped up on some local add site.

I was searching for "Setton RCS-X1000" with help of Google.. it was part of those terms which I sometimes search on the web just to see if any new information is to be found.

Well, as you can imagine; all of the sudden I found myself getting to Paris as fast as I could...

I don't blame you! Well, a road trip to Paris in the summer is a worthwhile thing to do in of itself... the bonus here is picking up a major piece of TOTL audio history. :thmbsp:

I can appreciate it winning a French industrial award, as this console design takes cues from other industries and blends them together in a usable fashion. The only odd thing I find is this super large two lever volume control, kind of a volume/balance all in one. It almost suggests this would be intended for use at performances or other large audio venues, as it promotes convenient rapid changes (as opposed to basic knobs that you simply set and forget).

As for sound quality, is there anything you might compare it to? Do you find it is honest in the sound with minimal colorization?

Btw, speaking of locating this through Google, this very thread is already showing up in results position #3... and I won't be surprised if it elevates further up in due time. Audio Karma is definitely frequently explored by the Google indexing engine (e.g. I wrote a review of an HK tuner and in just a couple of days it started coming up as the first hit).

new button..

well, long time no posting on this one;

I'll start with a reaction to the last post: the sound quality is quite a good, comparably say with the higher end Pioneer units, not the same level as the eXclusive material, but still it comes quite close.. the tuner sounds well, and picks up signal very easy, and strong. Not to much coloration in the sound; just the way I like it!

They should have designed a power amp to go with it! Well, without the poweramp I still like it anyway.., and now finally; it's complete; with help of a good friend I was able to replicate a button. So, here's some pics of the finished product:
