Advent speakers - question

I see that there are two models of the second large Advent, the ones without the masonite rings. One is over 25" high, the other is just over 22" high, what is the difference?

No s**t! But I am thinking of getting a pair and one has the rounded edges in front and is 25-3/4 x 13-7/8 x 11-1/4 while the other has square edges and is 22 x 13-1/4 x 10, yet both have the same drivers. Was this the Large vs Smaller Advent thingy?

Rob

Sorry, I couldn't help myself on that one.

There's a greater than zero chance Toasted Almond would be able to tell us what the REAL deal was. Let's see if he will chine in.

Cheers,
Russ

Rob:

Not quite sure on the two models, but the Small Advent has a very distinctive woofer with a huge dustcap that looks like it was scuplted out of wet bath tissue. The "square" version may be the Advent/1 which replaced the Small Advent, but used the same drivers as the LA. I sold a set of those a few years back but can't recall if they were veneered or vinyled.

Personally, I'd got with the larger cab with the rounded edges simply because it is the larger box and truer to the original Large Advent design, although I really prefer the 1st generation with the Masonite surrounds and beveled edge cabs.

These pairs all have the same drivers, so I guess the smaller pair are the ADvent/1s. Looks to be vinyl on the cabinets. There is a pair out there with the masonite from a chap I have dealt with before. So you feel that they sound better than the second run?

Thanks for the info.

Rob

Well, I wouldn't go that far. I just like the idea of them being the original design and prefer the bevel edge cabs. Sonic differences double blinded may be tough.

I use Small Advents in my garage, but have 3 sets of original Larges awaiting refoams. In fact, I'm considering bringing two sets to the Grumpfest (love that name!) so we can do the stacked Advents. I'm a homey for it, so going and getting them if anyone would want to hear would be no big deal. I'd probably run the LAs in a system, but with 20+ pairs of speakers here and a family, I gotta play favorites and so far my JBL 4311s win (but there are those La Scalas in the garage too!)

There's a ton of discussion on them over at AA on Vintage Asylum. "Bold Eagle" has really dug into these including reviews on recapping crossovers and internal wires. One thought is that the newer tweeters project better/wider and go down a bit lower I think, but some feel that the cutout in the grill contributes to the originals directionality.

For what it's worth, I almost always buy Advents

I believe the rounded edges are real wood - mahogony or something. And they look better. :)

I've taken them apart (I used to have both types!) and their crossovers are exactly the same. So I'm pretty sure they'd sound the same, too!

Well it doesn't much matter as they rapidly get out of my price range. There is even a pair on ebay today where the seller is starting at $150 and one of the woofers is missing. He said he took it out with the idea of refoaming it and now can't find it in the garage!

Rob

Sounds like my garage!
I came across a pair of baby advents today for $35.00.
I bought too much already this month, so left em behind.
They looked pretty good though.
Should I go back?:dunno:

Rob,

Take a look for Advent Legacy's. They are going cheap on ebay and they are excellent with My HK 930.

Jon:)

I saw the legacy's, if the price stays right I might stick the Graduates atop them. Also watching a local pickup - about 20 miles from me - for an EPI T/E 320 3-way, needs re-foam but I'm getting so I can do this with one hand. Anyone ever hear this speaker?

Rob

I had one T/E 320 a while back, sounded very similar to my T/E 120s I have. Probably similar to the Boston Acoustics A150s that are at my local GW as the store speakers - not for sale. GRRRRRRR!

Rob,

Here's an Advent 1 on the left and "The Advent" (aka Large Advent or "LA") on the left.

The Advent 1 measures 13 3/8" wide by 9 1/4" deep by 22 1/8" high.

The Advent (LA) measures 14 3/16" wide by 11 3/8" deep by 26" high.

Woofers (10") and tweeters (orange square with mesh) are identical on both. Both also have vinyl "utility" cabinets. Heven't found a pair of real wood veneer units yet.
