Large Advent surround difference?

Is there any difference between the surrounds for the original Large Advent with the masonite retaining rings and the ones with the all metal basket?

Now this subject also touches one of my in the near future projects...

I aquired a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10's which needs new surrounds and I've been attempting to check out any differences in repair kits. Of course, every different seller has the "best" kit. Seems the Advent (large) woofers are the same as the DQ-10's but I have read somewhere that there may be some differences? So what's the bottom line here with these kits and what would be the "go-to" choice? AND THIS: I've seen DQ's and Advents repaired both ways where the surround is inverted, then not? What's better?

The masonite ring was because, if I've got my facts straight, the speaker cone is a 10" and the frame used was a 12" frame- this masonite ring was to bridge the gap/space by using a 10" cone in that 12" frame.

As for the Dahlquist/Advent difference, I have no proof or absolute fact there's a difference, but what some believe and say is the voicecoil has additional windings in one of them- unsure which one- and possibly a slight increase in coil depth.

The surrounds offered for either, would seem to fit either, without any issue.

fantastic :) but what is it good for... or was it so short after - [inquisition... oops - a freud] prohibition - that everybody halluzinated and grabbed the wrong parts out of the boxes and the only possible solution was producing this ring instead of using matching parts... or was ther a nationwide lack of 12" conuses or 10" frames?

so, what is the acoustical sense of a ring of cardboard in a 12" frame with a 10" cone except of just filling the hole?

BIG difference!

Oh, there is a big difference in the surrounds for the Advent metal frame woofer and the masonite ring woofer.
Check out the pics.

Which is which in your pics?

The masonite ring surround is on the right

I've used the masonite ring surround on the metal basket before with good results. but I doubt I could ever use the metal surround on the masonite basket.

How stupid of me. i retract my previous statement :smoke:

Thanks for pointing that out Gene

My understanding is that the masonite ring and 12" basket was to allow greater cone travel, i.e., for a long throw woofer.

I've heard both that too, Rob, and hope that's the real reason. I have also heard that Advent (Kloss) could get a huge price break on 12" frames, and that cost factored in, the masinite ring added to fill the gap only.

Tough to weed out fact and fiction on the 'Net at times. I dunno which is which- wish we had Henry around to personally ask.

If H.K. were still here, he would tell us that, yes, he had a certain total cone travel distance in mind and that none of the available 10" frames were deep enough to allow this distance.

So he knew that Advent would either have to fabricate their own frames or find another solution.

To save tooling costs, etc., they decided they could use a 12" frame for the depth required and use a masonite ring to span the gap between the outer diameter of the 12" frame and the 10" cone diameter. Simple. :thmbsp:

Now, it could be that he got a good deal on a bunch of 12" frames but this was NOT the primary reason for using that size.

Of course, after Advent made some money on the original speakers, they were able to spend some of that profit on fabricating a dedicated special frame for the New Advent (the all-metal frame).

Doug, I'll go with that. sounds like the most concise, and accurate answer so far. Basically, both explanation combined in a logical statement that lends to reason.

Thank you!

From all this very good information then the standard 10" surround will not fit the Large Advent Masonite ringed woofer?

So who has the best surround kit? I need a DQ-10 kit first then a kit for small Advents next (unless I decide to sell those like they are.) Seems to be several different sellers on eBay and I've seen the parts express kits. Recommendations?

PE has been shipping the incorrect(small roll) foam according to the AA posters.
I took their advice and just bought from Loonietunes on eBay. RSSound has a better price but is an unreliable source who did not deliver my order from Dec.

The Large Advent masonite ring surrounds and the actual LA surrounds look the same to me.
