After ten years of looking, I may finally have the amp...

The guts differ slightly, and the interior paint more than slightly, but both the paint and the parts changed during the course of the first production year. With unicorns, you pretty much have to buy now, or wait another ten years. I figured I would either be dead or deaf and dead in ten years, so I am going to leave these in the capable hands of my good friend Mike to check out and refurbish. I know the power filter caps, and all the GoodAlls and black beauties will need to get gone, and then we will go from there.

The Fairchild 275s are pretty darn good amps, with some of the best iron. This completes my mono setup, and with the rarest of their unicorn amps. To get an incredibly rare quality pair of unicorn amps that completes a set,on a budget, is a never event.

I could talk about where these rank in the scheme of things, but I've found out it is better to let others talk who have more energy to preach. I do know the gray haired advisors I have learned to trust loved Fairchild.

I'll be sure to have an open house when these 275s are up and running, so those of you who want can have a listen.

:bowdown:i guess congradulations are in order and welcoming you to the fairchild amplifier owners club.:beerchug:now that you have the 2 amplifiers and although you said that itll be a mono setup with the 245 you can hunt for a second 245 and go full stereo.theres one on you know where but itll never sell for what the guy is asking.

any chance of a picture of the fronts?also did you get the cages with them?how about a manual? i see the one chassis is green.the 275 i had was the same.

Had a feeling they were 275s from the get go but didn't want to spoil the fun. Local sale? I didn't catch them on any of my usual avenues, and I search diligently. ;)

I have the Sam's if you need to borrow it.

Thanks, guys. There was a lot of sacrifice, savings, and hard work over the course of two years so I could afford to get them, even at the level of buy-in I jumped at.

I don't have a sou left for that 245, Chris, and then I would need to patch them through the Dynaco adapter, kinda like parking an Edsel in between two Porsche 356s. They can pull mono duty with the 245, dual mono stereo with the 240/245, or mix and match stereo with the Lafayette KT600, Fisher 400C, Ampex stereo pre, or the Harman Kardon Citation IV preamp. There is no lack of killer vintage preamps from circa 1957-1960, so I'll be content with these until a 248 falls in my lap.

There are over at my tech's house, which will help with the discipline to save more money for the refurbs in quick order. I'll ask him to send over some top shots. The front plaques are good, but both the chassis and transformers will need a respray

yeah i know theres no shortage of quality preamps at your house to choose from. when you can get message me the serial numbers so i can add them to my small database.and which one is which in relation to the amp with the green underchassis. ill ask again though did you get the cages or manuals?

HyKlas, these are in St. Louis, probably from a college professor or a McDonnel Douglass engineer's stereo. It is part of an ongoing 3rd party trade, so I don't know all the details.

When the third party brought these to his tech to get them fixed, the tech knew I have been looking for them for years, and called me. They never had a chance to make it to market beyond a couple phone calls, and even then I almost lost them. The saving grace(for me) was that they are going into an all Fairchild system that many folks will get a chance to hear.

Sam, the first priority is to get them running reliably. The second round will be a cosmetic retore in situ. I think

No cages or operators manual, Chris. I have a few leads, though.
Cool.I'd love to get a owners manual someday.fwiw be careful when hunting down cages.there are 2 different sizes.the ones for the 260 and one for the 275.the 275 will work on the 260 but the 260 won't work with the 275.

I've never seen or even had the opportunity to buy a Fairchild amp. I've stumbled into, tracked down, or was offered some amazing & rare stuff over the years but never a Fairchild amp. The closest I got was a mono preamp, tonearm, & cartridge from a radio station morgue clean-out. Yours are really an awesome pairing, all the best in the New Year!

mabe now since there is more fairchild gear owned here on ak i can get a dedicated fairchild forum that ive beenasking for since i dont know when.:smoke::biggrin:

The crazy part is this is the second set of monoblocs I had to pick up in the last two days. Here is the other matching set, and they are just about as rare, although far less valued. I wanted a pair of these since they came out in 1980, so this was a thirty five year wait. The specs are insane...
