AK Design Collaborative - Insignia-Class Economy Speakers (a.k.a Indignia)

Ok, I got ambitious and got the Mindignias up and running. They're in sad shape, asthetically speaking. Maybe Minduglia would be a better name right now.

Anyway, I haven't gotten time yet to do any measurements but subjectively they sound too bright. I need to bump the tweeter pad up a notch and see what happens. Overall not bad, just bright. Stay tuned.

Of measurements? Well, SURE - no curve junkie would be happy without seein' THOSE!

I just have to cut some baffles to be up and running with you. Have you given more thought to packing Incentria in a stock PE box?

Consider working with the Indignia XO topology so's I can order up more boards. ;)

WiredGuy pulled the originial Insignia baffles out of the dumpster yesterday and suggested I put them in BarterTown for posterity.

[Somebody could build with those and roadkill boxes, actually.... :yes: ]
 
Guess what, Mr. Z!... Indignia s/n 10 is finished at long last. I'll post pictures of the system soon.
 
The best I can suggest is that you try them.

If they don't work well, go to the design tweeter.... :dunno:
 
They look similar, and some specs are very similar, while other have bigger diff.
Actually I don' t know what they mean, so I don' t know if I need to care about that...

SPL is 89.0 vs 90.0 dB
Resistance: 5.5 vs 5.8 ohm
Impedance 8 ohm both

Sd 6.6 vs 4.9 cm2
Fs (Hz) 637.2 vs 1000 in the Audax. Here is the bigger difference between them.

I'm asking this just in case I need to tweak the crossover....

since you have them, its worth trying. The Audax is more than likely a better tweeter than the Dayton, but by tossing it into a crossover designed specifically for the inexpensive dayton, I would suspect that you are going to get worse performance unless you have an awful lot of luck on your side.
 
I was reading that a lower Fs allow to use the tweeter at lower frecuencies, but I've seen that the crossover frecuency in this design is 2.367 Khz, what seems in the useful range of the Audax, so I'll give it a try.
 
We ran them on an ST70 at Jay's house last year and they rocked. I wouldn't think you'd need any more than that.

I had the Mindignias at the show but only a few people requested them. The ones that did give them a listen liked them.

I drive Indignias serial #35 and #36 with a Bob Latino ST70 clone running GL reissue KT66s in a room that 10' by 12'. I find the combo to be an excellent match. Indignias are amazing, and, the price was right. :banana::banana:

I've had an ST 70 on them, not bad, a Mcintosh MC-225, which was a great match.

The Indignias produce nice bass out of a relatively small box. One of the design compromises is that they can consume a lot of power. that said, the MC-225 sounds absolutely marvolous.

The Indignia is a very affordable project, using VERY affordable drivers. The performance is not "cheap" this speaker has wonderful sound characteristics,
very surprising. Im not surprised you liked them so much. I think they catch many by surprise. They are expecting it to sound "affordable" ........it sounds very "unaffordable" when listened to. Note: This isnt the case with most things in life, so build a set. Very nice to have a nice bookshelf sized speaker for little money, that sounds like a lot.

Very impressive speaker, for sure.

Russellc has it right. I've been using my Indignias in the same spot for over a year now, with absolutely no desire to replace them.

I don't have any other piece of gear in place for a longer time period.

I cant wait to try them on the F-5, which is getting closer and closer. For those that dont know, Specialidiot had his Dewicket tuned Mc-225 on the Indinias......until he got the F-5 on them. Now, the MC-225 is owned by another! Point is, expensive esoteric electronics are not wasted on these gems. They really do sound that good.:yes:

All true stories and the F5/Indignia combo is still in place, I listen to it every day at least a couple of hours in my home office. Sure once in a while I'll dream about new gear, maybe Usher Tiny Dancer's for speakers or some other fancy amp, but this combo is so sweet and pure I am going to stick with it for a while.

Besides, my Indignias were built FOR ME by co-inventor and Swell Guy RayW. I'll never get rid of them!
