AK Retiree Club

Time, I think, to repost a little hint HR gave me when I retired: make your last day the first business day of the month to be sure your company health insurance overlaps the start of your new insurance in retirement.

Definitely. As of right now, the plan is to work through the 1st Friday in April which is the 3rd. Although when meeting with our Medicare rep this afternoon for the misses and setting up my next appt. I realized that is Good Friday.

We had planned to work a year or so longer, but the increasing stresses at work, my knees, ankle, hip and shoulder are screaming at me. Couple that with our retirement accounts exceeding our expectations, no debt and financial advisors work and blessings, we have decided it's time to call it a day.

Enjoy !

It took a while, but finally read through this thread, all 271 pages.

The misses officially retired today making Thursday her first full day. As of right now I plan on following her out in 8 weeks and becoming an official member of this group.

:beerchug:

Just fill out the 50 page application form.

Or buy us all a drink (whichever is easiest).

I am supposed to be in FL until March 1st but it looks like there is an oppertunity to say another week. If it works out I'm staying, that not something I could have done in my working days. Of course I couldn't have spent a month here to begin with!
That sounds delightful - I’d love to spend a month somewhere warm during the winter. What’s your housing situation in FL - do you rent a house or a condo? Do you have a dog that tags along?

Heading to FL myself on Saturday. Was just there for two weeks in January. (photographing wildlife)

The best part of retirement is being able to go where I want, when I want. Since retiring, my wife and I are typically in the same state one to two weeks a month.

Good advice, but it depends on your company. My company ended insurance at midnight of your last day of work, so I retired the first of the month w/ 3 hours notice as my company could have not accepted my two week notice and I was concerned that my manager might do that seeing he was an ass and my reason for leaving.

Make sure you are up to date with all your coverages and have them set up for seamless transition to avoid any surprises regarding coverages and payouts.

rent a condo, no pets allowed except for owners. We have a cat sitter that watches the cat when we travel.

Heads up for those of you that have spare cash laying around.

Marcus by Goldman Sachs has a deal going on for a 3.65% interest savings account PLUS up to $1500 bonus for depositing 100K and leaving it in for 90 days.

Other bonus tiers under that.

In my younger days, I was better off turning my cash into inventory or real estate instead of retirement accounts. Now, I keep my eyes open for "deals" like this.

Hello everyone! I rarely post on this forum these days, but this is an interesting thread. I retired Feb 1st after 39 years in the information technology profession and turned 63 on Feb 15th. Both my wife and I are now retired. I plan to decompress for a while and then let life happen. It will be a real adjustment but I finally got tired of working last year. I'm not much into vacation/travel/leisure. I always ended up burning my vacation days. Heck I vacationed out the last two months and still got paid for a week! The old farm kid in me I guess. I get a little anxiety being away from home for more than a day or two, but do plan to take a couple of short road trips each year and see how it goes. So a whole new world awaits. I also casually tinker with photography, ham radio, audio, and (poetry if an idea comes to mind). Best to all of you that are retired!

I find this to be the best plan, no need to sweat every little detail.

Became a grandpa for the second (and probably last) time today. Dean (father's middle name) Lawrence (my name), 8 lbs 1 oz., greeted at home by his 2 1/2 yr old sister Casey. Daughter checked in the hospital just after 8AM, Baby arrived at 10:01AM.

All is well.

Congratulations!

Entering into my 4th year of retirement and love it! My schedule is as busy as I want it to be and we see our kids frequently.

We're both retired-now about 5 years.
At first we worried about being in each other's space fulltime. That turned out to be just fine. No worries.
She bird-watches, does the cooking and watches a lot of TV and occasionally dabbles with genealogy to trace her (and mine) family roots.
I do the dishes, wrench on our vehicles and my dirt bike. build and fly drones, play with electronics [restorations tube stuff, solar, computers etc.] and of course dig on my tunes, video games and a couple IPA's.
We both love rock-n-roll, fishing, camping and metal detecting.

No kids to mess with (they're on their own), and now only one elderly cat. Perhaps our last..
I take my cat with us to central Wyoming in the summers where my brother and mom live up in the mountains -where the deer and antelope really do roam free.
The days tend to run together and we sometimes confuse what day of the week it is. woo hoo!
A running joke is on Sundays, the scramble to prepare for work Monday morning....NOT!

What I do not miss the most about no longer working is, periodic performance reviews, and the pace and methods of participation in daily work regimes.
Things like tense meetings (in person or over the web) and abiding with ITAR security protocols.
Not to mention managing difficult people and dealing with upper management knot-heads that sometimes inure me to don a body condom or a take a shower afterward.

I do miss much of the camaraderie with the hoi polloi (and oligoi) factory and engineering folks, and solving their problems involving precision measurement.

.
I've been retired for 15 years, and my wife has been retired for 24.

My wife (the big boss) still gives me an annual performance review, and according to her, my performance needs improvement. Therefore, no raises, no bonuses, no stock options.

I told her I don't care...in fact, I don't have a care in the world!!!
