They were collectible before some jackwagon cut the "dia-cones" out of them. What a shame.

That is too bad. The cabinet looks like there was some thought put into it. I'd love to hear it. I won't buy them, but couldn't a fresh dust cap be fitted?

The first question is can one of the same mass and material be sourced?
Then, we have to figure out what little secrets are involved in properly bonding it to the voice coil assembly.
Most dustcaps simply glue to the cone and protect the gap from gathering dust.
In an Altec dia-cone that aluminum dome is a speaking part of the moving assembly responsible for much of the drivers upper range extension. It is very precisely attached to the voice coil former. It was a pretty interesting, patented, and trademarked design. Sadly, replacement parts for these have been unavailable for decades.
The Altec 603 took the same cone design to a 15 inch speaker and added a multi cell horn over the aluminum dome.

Aha. That explains a lot, and makes this more of a shame than I would have thought. Thanks for the explanation. I suppose one could also add a tweeter and capacitor, but that further takes away from the overall original sound.
