Another CL scam ...or not? I'm confused!

Should I mail him a box full of bricks or just let it go?

R.I.P. monk Mitchell Rapp!
But something tells me he will be resurrected soon...

You do realize you have created a monster, don't you? This is only going to grow. Five years from now some poor scammer is going to be confused when he thinks he has successfully baited the hook and then an email reply he gets will have a picture of poor, dead Monk so-and-so, with his business hanging out.
I applaud your creativity. With my lack of patience I only have two options for scammers; ignore them, or tell them to f-off.

The things you do when bored..... No, I wouldn't sell "the item" to this guy.
Besides he never even mentioned what it is. Tells a lot, isn't it?
A quick way to cut to the quick on these guys is to say, "I am selling several items on CL right now. Which one are you referring to?"

Anything other than a description of what you are selling only makes this whole thing more fun.

And yeah, the whole point is that they send you a lot more than you wanted, usually in the four figure range, ask you to send "most" of it back and keep the rest for your trouble, then, about a week later the bank figures out that the Cashiers Check, or whatever, that you deposited is no good and withdraw the funds from your checking account.

I'm a bit more hard core about these. If the response is in this "broken english" format, I immediately assume scam. And if I ever caught one of these guys, he'd be pulling a 7.6 out of his knee. The crime does not deserve death, only permanent crippling.

Me:

Ola,

We build MacBook Pro with 19" screen and iPhones G4.
You can find all the specifications on Apple web site.
Price depends on a quantity desired.
Please let me know who many do you wish to purchase.

May the brightness of God's face light your path in life
and provide you with great savings on your electric bills (same
as Hi gives us in our dark caves of Connecticut mountain peaks)

Should I ask him to provide prepaid shipping label for 100 lbs box (full of holy rocks) to Nigeria???
It just hit me. I'll bet the guy is reading your replies using a translater like babelfish. I would not be surprised if he is also creating his replies the same way. He brushes by the definition of "erection" in his language, racking it up to confused software. That's gotta be it.

There's almost always a few giveaways in these: the urgent need to buy NOW...never any indication of what it is that they want to buy NOW...the superfluous mention of wanting "to give as a gift to a son 'schooling' out of state" (or graduating college/getting married/whatever)...and, of course...convoluted shipping & payment arrangements. The majority of us see though this crap nearly instantly...it's the .01% out there that makes these profitable.
Without exception, every single one of these I've ever seen (CL) involves them eventually sending a cashiers check or other similar document for WAY too much money, apologizing, and asking you to please send most of it back, and keeping a couple hundred for your trouble.

They depend on the timing of when a bank will apply the funds from one of these checks to your account - usually a day or so - and the time the bank figures out it is phony - usually a week or so. The bank simply does what it always does when it gets a bad check. It reverses the transaction. You are out the check you sent them. You could sell a $30 item and end up losing a couple thousand, depending on how gullible you are.

Mitch died, but business goes on :thmbsp:

I just feel a bit disappointed that he is not interested in medium size aircraft carrier :scratch2:
It would be more useful in Nigeria than snow blowers.....

This guy can be strung along for a l-o-n-g time!

You can introduce a new monk to deal with him, who can have a whole new set of quirks. The first Monk's death can result in various new security regulations. You could even explain that all your Monks walk around with their genitalia hanging out (as in the dead Monk's pic) and require him to show that he is devout enough to buy Holy H.E.L.L. (Happily Erected Levitational Laptops) from Monks, by sending you a picture of himself similarly "hanging out." (He'll get some schmuck to pose, if he doesn't himself). The new Monk could also confide (since you are such good friends) that as Monks, the Monks are deprived of opportunities to enjoy the heavenly delights of sexual gratification, so could he please send you pics of his woman, similarly on display (topless)? You could then go a step further, and say that although you'd never had such inclinations before, his picture is making you turn homosexual, and fall in love with him, so could he please send you a picture of himself holding a sign saying, "I love you, (the name you are using)" or "I love to have sex with monks for laptops" or whatever. Maybe make it a little more subtle, something about "Laptop dancing turns me on" or whatever. Just get him "invested" in the thing to a greater extent, by making him do even more ridiculous things, so you can keep stringing him along and wasting his time.

You could even say that you have another customer with a huge order of laptops being sent to (a destination about 200 miles from where he is), and that, in order to reduce shipping hassles (blah-blah), his laptops are being sent there --or even better, were already shipped there by mistake, but if he hurries, he can still intercept them. Maybe you could say that your holy order was "scammed" by some guys near him in Nigeria (you can use bits of another scam's communications), but... (you get the idea-- stay creative!). If you can get him to actually pay for a trip, that would be perfect. (He may well borrow the money for a ticket, getting him into deep doo-doo back home later, from the guys he borrowed from, once he has spent their money but can't get anything back from you, to repay them with.)

Then you can make excuses when the laptops aren't where they were supposedly mis-sent... perhaps even make him travel yet further on...

LOTS of ways to stretch this out for a while yet.

He'll go along with any nonsense, as long as he believes there is a realistic, even if increasingly remote, possibility he can pull his scam on you in the end, or will walk away with valuable merchandise, or otherwise make money from you.

Be careful about using your own email address -- that was not wise. I would suggest changing it to a completely anonymous one, and even cancelling the old one (in real life). Make up some excuse to explain the change to him.

This thread has been HILARIOUS thus far --keep it up! :thmbsp:

Ola sounds like he may be just a SIT. (Scammer In Training.) I would think any experienced scammer could recognize the scam baiting going on here and move on. Even if you were legit, the amount of effort he's putting in seems to be out of proportion compared to a "normal" mark. I wonder if the economic downturn has hit the scammers, too, and they are so desperate for income they'll keep going along with anyone who'll write back. I'm *almost* starting to feel sorry for Ola. (Almost.) He's turning out to be a pathetic excuse for a scammer.

Scam (part II)

Mitchell may be dead, but life goes on!

"Greetings, my son!
Let me welcome you to the Dark Side!

We all just returned from our beloved brother Mitchell Rapp's funeral.
It was beautiful (but sad) ceremony.
His remains were laid on the altar and our oldest dragon burned Mitchell body with
his holy fiery breath!
Attached is a small picture of that unforgettable moment.
But life goes on.
Back to the business at hand. Unfortunately Mitchell's death messed up our sales.
Just this morning we shipped 250 of our laptops to Nigeria (ironic, isn't it?).
We will not resume manufacturing for some time because our brothers at Financial Cave still
at the final table. Also Battery Park in New York City can not provide batteries for the laptops anymore.
So I am very sorry, but we will not be able to fulfill your request regarding Macbooks.
However there is hope. Our Nigerian customer (located in Ibadan) accidentally wired more money than he owed us, so we shipped
him 50 more laptops. He doesn't need them, so you can take them if you want to.
Payment can be made later.

As for our turbocharged V8 snowblowers I attach another picture so you can
take a look.
Do you prefer 19" chrome wheels or regular stock?

And you still not interested in that medium size aircraft carrier, aren't you?
Just checking...

After all I have a strange feeling that we are more than business partners.
Aren't we related somehow?

In any case... may Budha bless you by greatly improving your mental abilities!

Sincerely

Father Darth Vader
Prior of the Holy Order of St. Thomas and Aruba"
