another Flexi rack thread

Hi All, I just got four slabs of Mahagony planed down and now ready to build a Flexi rack. Where is the best place to buy all-thread? Waiting for my cameras batteries to recharge so I can post pix.

I have always thought that ACME thread and nuts would make a killer looking, hell for stout flexi. Let me find some pictures.

These parts are available from Grainger, Motion Industries - most industrial supply houses. They do get pricey, but the metal is high quality and nicely machined. For non-precious, they still have that heavy, rich metal quality - plenty of stength, too. With proper weight on the bottom and good shelving, a guy could get away with two, maybe one, rod. These rods and nuts can be ordered very large. We use them at work to move 2 ton rolls of paper.

I found a commercial supplier of threaded fasteners in my area and they were the best for availability and price. The lumber superstores have threaded rod as does my local hardware store.
How much Mahogany do you have? If you have enough for legs, you wouldn't have to shell out for the rod and fasteners. It might look more like furniture with wooden xupports, also. Just a thought. I know how creative you are DJ, so it wouldn't surprise me to see supports fashioned out of exhaust pipe, glass, stone, or any other different material.

I was just at HD and grabbed a piece of 3/4" all thread, then went to the plumbing department and found the copper pipe. The 3/4" all thread slipped very nicely into the pipe. So I think I will cover all the all thread with polished copper pipe.

I do like the brass things but can't figure out how to use them from the pic.

Thanks West....I see you can still type while high on Vicodine and a bad leg:D If I had time, I would make metal sculpture legs for all of it. I am painting the new shop today and will try to get some pix of the wood up later today when it gets too hot to work out there.

BTW, were you at my personal HD in Pontiac on Old Telegraph? I think I probably paid for the renovation on that place over the past (almost) ten years! :)

My table saw has something silly like 3/4" or 1" acme threads to adjust the height and angle of the blade. I've always eyed it for use in a flexy rack.
 
There is the traditional Home Depot, Lowes and ACE, but check your local directory for "bolt and screw" wholesalers.

You're only limited by your imagination.

Yep, that's the one. There is one on 59 but it is a bit further way.

The brass nuts have internal threads to match the threaded rod. The external threads on one end are to thread into some type of mount. In your case, I would think a steel flange/plate that would then screw to the bottom of your shelf, allowing for superior support. If you wanted to add a nut on top of the shelf for looks, there are all kinds of nuts, including round ones that would thread down snug against the top of the shelf.

dang, i should make a flexi rack with the two big ass pieces of bowling lane I bought in ebay years ago...there are some pics floating around on AK...lets see if I can dig. with sawhorses/

The 4 pieces I am using for the rack are the last of the pile. Although, all the shops around here used this stuff for years but don't use it any more with CAD. I am sure there are stock piles around here.
 
this is my copper clad flexi-rack; of birch ply, and maple edge banding.
I built it four or five years ago - long ago enough that the copper has "patinated" to the degree that you see. Its a shorty, intended to be fit under a larger library table that holds my TT's. Because it was so short, I built it with 5/8" all-thread. Its perfectly stable with that smaller size thread rod.

The feet are acorn nuts with rounded caps for minimal foot contact isolation.
The copper cladding covers the bolts via a system of through-slip connectors that slip over the main pipe. The slip connectors (no stops) allow the connector to expand under the shelves to cover the elevation adjusting nuts.

Very nice. That is what I am looking at. I like the patina effect over time. I figure that if I polish the copper to begin with, it will patina evenly over time.
