another Flexi rack thread

Here is mine. Maple plywood with maple banding. Used 5/8 rod and polished wire conduit. I just got some axle sleeves with hex set screws to eliminate spinning on all the nuts.


That looks really nice... I like the thick shelves.
 
+1 on McMaster-Carr; lot of choices on their site. I made a mid-weight rack using 1" regular thread rod, acorn nuts for feet, with 3/4" Baltic birch shelves.

I used clear shellac on the ply and fine steel wool on the hex nuts to take down that overly-shiny zinc plate appearance.
 
I've noticed that the racks shown here use 4 vertical legs- the old plan I used specified three legs. Any thoughts?

I believe (I could be wrong) the three legs were to make it easier to level. I've got six legs on mine and it took quite a while to get it to sit even and level on the area where I have it. Because mine is double wide three legs wouldn't work.
 
Mine is a three legged design. I don't like four legs. I've used three legs on some really heavy turntable plinths, with fine results.
 
3 just makes it easier to level. If you don't mind spending an extra few minutes, it's only a minor advantage. 3 legs could potentially make access slightly easier, as well. Neither would be too high of a priority, so I'd probably not worry much at all about 3 vs 4.
 
My rack is too big to use 3 legs. I'll be needing 4. My turntable alone weighs 87lbs.

I just finished a true beaster of a stone plinth build. By some loose figuring, not accounting for cut-out areas (minimal cut-out design), I'm looking at being around 150lbs++, with 175lbs not even slightly being out of the question, with all the gear and arm-board in place. Its on three legs.
I don't have much desire to build a heavier one now - got that out of the blood.

Do you have pix Mike??? Love to see it. I think the depth of the shelve has a bearing on going with three legs as well. If it is really deep and you have weight on the one legged end out at the corner it would put too much torque load on it.
 
It consists of a lot of hard-compressed talc, with crystalline veins of harder material.
Its really nice to work with; much of it done with common carpentry tools with masonry blades, carbide bits, etc. Its quite machinable with common hand tools. My fanciest tools are a wet tile saw (table saw style), and router. Beyond that, common hand drills, angle grinders, machine drill bits, wood spade bits; actually, wood spade bits work really well!
I'd have to compare it to working with the more sandy of flagstone, like the arizona stones.

--snip-- I have a really ugly mdf shelved flexi that needs a refurb.I think I can re-work some birch ply shelves into something presentable.

I had several metal shelves left over so I utilized the "flexi" concept and hung them between the larger shelves:
