antenna

Not to get in any kind of debate as I don't have the base science to do that. So I'll just show what I have built and show how it performs and let it go from there:

This antenna is a full band 30" square Modified Cubic Quad antenna. I originally found the basic plans on line that web site is now gone.

This is the signal strenght meter on my unrestored Pioneer TX-9100 tuner in my office system at 1:00pm

The antenna is approx 10' off ground level 38 miles from the transmitter and in the middle of my house directly between the antenna and the outside of my house is my 300 amp split base power service half a dozen 40 watt flouresent tubes in the ceiling of my shop just on the other side of the office wall which carries 2 messes of 1/2" copper water pipe up stairs. My office directly under the atenna has 2 computers an Office stereo system varous wiring in the ceiling about 4' away from the antenna.

Outside my house is the neighbors house about 20 feet way so in a direct line between the antenna and the first open air it see's.

The lay of the land between my house and the broadcast antenna is basically flat with the antenna on a hill high enough to be pretty much a straight line.

The Station puts out approx. 97,000 watts with 2 HD channels on either side of the analog.

I have stations every .2mHz all up and down the dial.
Between about 6:00am and 9:00am this morning the meter was reading approx. 4.75-4.8 it seams to drop a little as the sun comes up higher in the sky we have moutains and foot hills to our East.

I lack enough confidence in my fabrication skills to undertake the construction of this type of antenna, but I want one, for sure. We live in the mountains, in a forest thick with trees, The only open spaces are where trees were removed for house foundations. We could not get cell tower signals because of these trees, so I bought an ATT Microcell, which works via internet cable. Are there commercially built cubical quads that I could buy? And if so, could I call out the frequency of the college stations that I want to listen to?

Maaate! FM wavelengths are 3 Metres LONG aka 11 feet! A cubical Quad for FM needs to be a lot bigger than that, the user in this case could probably get good results with a T dipole made from 300ohm twin-wire ribbon. why? because signal strength where he is is fine.

One other thing? most tuner's signal strength meters were designed to make them look sensitive in the shop. You need to almost PEG such Meters to know you are getting good results.

A cubical QUAD is a directional antenna and it needs to be vertical, he's got his on the CEILING - horisontal, ....... technical knowledge?

I am R.S. Lynn. I could email you if I knew your email address. I do not get good signal strength, because of the dense forest surrounding our house in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The existing T-dipole yields noisy weak signal.
 
You need a multi element Yagi antenna. This is the gold standard. You might also need a mounting tower. Rotor is optional.
 
it is really quite simple, a yagi or even a folded dipole without a rotor or means to rotate/locate is sub optimal unless you only want to receive signals from one direction.
