Anyone else suffer from migranes ?

Thanks again guys for all the advice. There is some that I will try.

I tried feverfew for about a year and unfortunately it was of little relief. however I will try the hawthorn and feverfew together.

I tried Imitrex when it was first release. Had to give self injections. Stuff did weird things to me and I just wont take it now. I have not tried it in any other form then the injections though.

Among the many others that I have tried amitrypteline, Cafergot which i hated with all the caffeine in it, Tenormin and about 50 others. I been searching for something to help for so long that i grasp at any new straws.

My mother who has suffered for 40 years with them has been everywhere from the Mayo clinic to a headache clinic in Chicago. She has found relief with some of the DHE drug. One in particular that was a wonder drug for her was an Inhaler of DHE that no longer ( last I checked ) due to closing of the factory in Mexico. I would give anything for them to start making it again so I could try it.

For now I have 1 1/2 vicidin 7.5's in me and the pain has subsided. what I really need to do is try to sleep it off now but I have 3 little ones here who need my attention...

Thanks again for all your suggestions and keep em coming. I will surely try the ones that are new to me.

If you go the Feverfew route be sure and use the tinture. Julia got some relief from the dried herb in capsule but the tinture knocks it out.

The Hawthorn is basically a heart tonic. Long use and slow results. I have never had a problem with BP but supposedly Hawthorn is an adaptogen and so regulates BP. It will raise low BP and lower high BP. It not being a problem for me I can't tell you if it is true. I use it in tinture also.

Grumpy, you HAVE to get that BP down. That could be your problem right there, if they have you on meds, they don't have you on the right ones, or high enough dosages.

Those numbers are borderline stroke risk. I'm NOT kidding. High BP can single handedly make for headaches, or make them worse. You need to get those numbers down, pronto.

Be careful with the herbal / snake oil stuff - it can sometimes do more harm than good. If any of it worked that well, a pharmacutical company would be selling it, regulated.

Cheers,
Russ

Never had a migraine but for better than 13 years I suffered from cluster headaches, sort of a first cousin to migraines. I've estimated that I had something in the neighborhood of 10 or 11 thousand attacks. I spent most of my twenties so (legally) drugged up I can barely remember it (except for the pain). Some of the drug side effects were almost as bad as the pain. Then in my early 30's, I hooked up with a very smart neurologist who wasn't real thrilled about what the previous batch of doctors had been pumping into my system (with no positive results). She suggested something that has no side-effects, doesn't make you a zombie and worked for me about 70% of the time - oxygen inhallation. I have a big-assed green oxygen tank in my bedroom. When I felt a HA coming on, I'd hook up the mask and start the flow at about 10 liters a minute. Like I said, worked for me in about the first 10 minutes about 70% of the time. YMMV (big time!).

I've been getting headaches since I was 12. Didn't know that they were migraines until I was in High School. I can most definately relate to the the pain. I would rather gouge out my temples out with a spoon. Dark rooms and lying with my head back really helps. I can pop Excedrin or Motrin like candy but still looking for something that works the best for me. Vicodin actually gives me a headache! According to the doc, my triggers are mainly stress. I have not been able to identify any foods that may trigger a migraine yet.

Take care, I really feel for ya.

Yeah, Dave, yr BP is WAY high...Think yr body is trying to tell you somethin' & you ain't listenin'...I can speak from VERY personal experience on that. I've had a few headaches since my stroke, but NOTHING like the killer-diller ones I used to get...Could also be bad eyesight...if you're in yr 40s,& wear glasses, I'd about guarantee you really need bifocals. Do yrself, & all of us a favor, & get yr BP under control.-Sandy G.

FWIW, Three guys I worked with had HIGH BP and sugar. Two were on pills (BP/sugar), the third was on insulin injections and BP pills. I went and got 4 quart size mugs. Everyday, for three weeks, I would grab some jugs of distilled water and lead the group into drinking two quarts each, throughout the shift. They whined, crabbed, wussed...BUT after they all got checked out by their Docs, and their Docs remarked about the lower BP and Sugar count they had, they started understanding the importance of diluting your "Poisons" with at least 64 oz. of water daily. Try it. Drink water till your piss looks like your on a beer hoot (as in almost clear). A couple of days won't get it. Do it for at least three weeks and see that just WATER can do wonders, after all, what % water are we all?

My mother has debilitating migranes, which I inherited. Between us have tried everything too. For me plain old ibuprofen, like 1200 mg works the best. Hard on the stomach though. I feel for anyone who has migranes. Would rather have my fingernails pulled out then a migraine. Hope find some relief Grumpy.

i had migranes on and off for about a year when i was 11 or 12. dont know why they stopped or started. my oldest had them when she was 16-17. her MD had her keep a dietary diary and looked for patterns with what she ate and when the headaches would occur. she has eliminated stuff like red meat and raw onions from her diet and hasnt had a migrane in over 2 years.

Man Grump, you have my sympathy. I went through a bout of cluster HAs for about 5 years straight about (thank God!) 15 years ago. The pain was incredible. It was so bad at times I didn't think I would make it. I was working in an ER as a Nurse and was lucky enough to have understanding Docs get me through it. I would need to get an occasional shot of morphine. I was worked up by several neurologists until I met one who also suffered from cluster HAs. He was pretty blunt about not wasting money looking for a cure. I took pain meds when I needed them and finally outgrew them. You might try staying away from booze for a lenghty period. It was one thing that helped me.

Status Migraines

My mom had migraines for many years. When they lasted more than 72 hours, they were called "Status Migraines" and she went to the hospital for an IV of a drug called DHE. More lately, she takes Relpax.

I assume you've looked at every website possible, but just in case, here's one that mom's doc referred her to recently. It's actually for kids, but apparently the info is good for all ages. http://www.emedicine.com/neuro/topic529.htm

I hope you find something soon-

the triptans

i know the imitrex didnt help, but a lot of people that didnt respnd well to imitrex do well ith Relpax. ask your doc for some samples, cuz Relpax is EXPENSIVE.
tyler

Its funny cause i read Readers Digest and just caught an ad for relpax. I was thinking i should ask the doc about it too. Thanks for reminding me.

I did get about 4 hours of sleep last night. Most Ive gotten in 10 days. Feel better now but its still with me. Hoping to shake this by tomorrow or the next.

Grump,
I feel for you. I've suffered with them since I was about 8 or 9. My mom and sister also suffer from them. I get the aura's , etc. Nothing ever really helped. I'd just lay on the bed with the lights out until it went away. One thing seems to have helped some, (I know you will love this), I cut down on the beer/booze. Has helped the BP also. AS I get older they also seem to be lessening. I'll hit the big 50 next month, and I hope they keep getting less and less.
Hope you find some relief soon.

Well Grump we have more in common than I thought.

After shoulder surgery 6 years ago, I got addicted to pain medicine...unconsciously really, I had to take it for about 4 weeks after the surgery, first percocet then the 7.5 hydrocodone you have now. When I finally came off the stuff I couldn't sleep....didn't know it at the time but I was suffering withdrawal.

Now I haven't taken any for almost two years, luckily my shoulder and back haven't acted up during that time, however I know they will, its just a matter of time. The opioids are wonderful medicines for pain - if you take them as prescribed, for a relatively short period of time. Dependency comes along faster than you realize then that blurs into addiction - for some.

I take Ibuprofen as well now when I'm in pain - about 5 200mgs at a time, try to only do that once a day when needed.

I'm concerned about when real pain returns and I have to take hydrocodone or oxycodone again. But I'm like you, they're the only thing that really works. Yes, I've tried most of the non-steroidal anti inflammatories that are prescribed.

I think the advice of styler below is well taken: take 1-2 every 4 to six hrs as needed and for about a week to ten days, my experience is you're headed for trouble if any of those numbers is increased.

Good luck with the migraine, I'm thankful I don't suffer from that problem.

I almost wish It was booze but I quit years ago.

Between chronic back problems and headaches The entire 1990's are a mere blur to me thanks to the wonders of modern meds. At any given time my cabinets were full of more pain meds then Walgreen's drug store. That came to a screeching halt around 2000. I choose to quit. I take meds on a very limited basis now and try to avoid all now. I was the same way with alcohol and other substances.

Ironically I am the same way with stereo gear. I want it all !!

I understand that all too well. I gave up booze over 8 years ago. Have you given Prozac a try. Their is a correlation between type A and compulsive people like us and migraines.

Opioids and Relpax

For anyone who has to take opioid painkillers, there is some small relief in sight. Take a look at a company called Pain Therapeutics (PTIE). They are going through the lengthy FDA tests on a set of drugs that combine an opioid with extremely minute amounts of Naltrexone, which is a drug used to cancel the effects of opiats in addicts. In normal doses, Naltrexone removes the high, and the painkilling. In minute doses, Naltrexone increases painkilling and reduces side effects. Generally, it's possible to give one quarter the amount of opioid with the same analgesic effect, and less then 25% of the side effects. PTIE is about a year away from being able to market their morphine and oxycodone versions, and a little longer away from being able to market a time-release oxycodone that doesn't dissolve in alcohol or ether or when ground up. I understand that versions of hydrocodone and the others will follow.

Meanwhile, Grumpy, you should try Relpax immediately, and I hope your HA goes away tonight!
