Bando transformers

Maybe not totally lost.... That whte cover with the wires going there will be the primary.... That winding you see will be the secondary. Usually you will see the thermal fuse pins in the enclosed area on that series

On the other side of the transformer there is a small capsule with two pins in it which have blobs of solder on them but I can't see if they are joined or just are pins.

Just spotted that the main fuse before the transformer is rated at 630mA so a smaller torroidal would do wouldn't it? It's rated at 150W Max so that's 80VA 1.6A so would a 80VA 25Vx2 torroidal be good? Then its not stressing the fuse or doesn't this matter anyway?

...Think I might've just contradicted myself...

Shouldn't the main fuse be 2.0A or 2.5A ? The schematic is kinda low resolution. It should also be printed or labled somewhere near the fuse location on the unit as to what size fuse is required.

Just found the service manual for the amp.

It produces 21 Watts per channel

630mA fuse and max power consuption @240V is 150W

Does this give a better idea of what voltage I need going in from the secondaries?

You need approx 28-29 vdc rail voltage.

20vac X 1.414 = 28.3vdc - .6 = 27.7vdc.

27.7vdc is close enough.

The question is what VA or current capacity to select.

Anteks AS-1220 is 100VA or 2.5amp which should be sufficiant. It has a dual primary so it can be wired for 120vac or 240vac 50/60 hertz. It has the 0- 20,0-20 secondary which can be wired 20-0-20 fashion.

Ok,

I'm not hot on transformers. Could you explain the wiring configurations a little further?

On the topic of the VA, The speaker protection fuses on the amp are both 2A.

Sorry to drag this up, but I finally got around to doing it and bought a Toroidal 120VA transformer that gives me two 20V secondaries. I Centre tapped it to get the right voltages and the amp works perfectly.

I've been using it for a week or more and its been fine. But tonight I came to it and tried to turn it on and.... nothing.

I checked and the main fuse (630mA) had blown. I replaced it and tried it again and it blew instantly. I took it to the bench and put another fuse in and hooked it into the DBT. The bulb flashed bright then went dim - almost out and the amp worked perfectly - no issues.

I then took it off the DBT and tried it again and the fuse blew.

I'm guessing that maybe the new Toroid is a bit higher rated than the old transformer or it allows for a higher in-rush (I think i remember something about toroidals being able to cope with higher in-rush) so maybe the fuse needs to be up rated or changed to a slow blow?

I'm not 100% sure what to do so I seek your advice and guidance.

Thanks!

I think so - 630mV 250V T. Thats time delay right? :withstpd: I'll get hold of some delay fuses and try those...

Toroidal transformers have huge inrush currents. It's not uncommon to see then with 10A primary fuses or more.

hope someone can help here....I have a pioneer A-88X and have a power selector gone, without it I can seem to hard wire it 110 volts. I did my vsx7500 , but I had the broken selector and is a single transformer... im looking at it now and im not attempting until I get some better info!

Hi and sorry yes - forgot to mention all that!

It's a Pioneer SA-420. Picked it up off someone who couldn't get it working. I've got power going in up to the transformer then nothing afterwards. The outputs on the transformer move from 0VAC to 0.01VAC when I apply power so I think its the transformer. Nothing looks blown in there either - maybe a few baked resistors but thats all.

If it helps the main electrolytics are rated 4700uF @ 35V
This is a real junk amp. I suggest not spending any money to get it working. If you can get a free new transformer, then sure, but please don't buy something new. That's expensive, and this amp will never sound good.
