Best Rock Guitar Solos

david gilmour on pink floyd's 'animals'....the whole cd:music:...but one of his best guitar workouts is: 'Dogs'.:yes:
there was a time in my youth...i used to listen to that track at least once a day!:smoke:
 
On the subject of David Gilmour:

His strength,is the 'emotion' evoked via his solos,the achievement being how few notes he plays to attain that result.
There are a lot of guitarists who try to impress with a flurry of notes.As if quantity equaled quality.
Gilmour says more with the bare minimum,than most guitarists do with ten times the number of notes.

How about Steve Vai's "For the Love of God". He fasted, meditated, and had no sex for four days, nailed it in one take.:yes:

White light white heat, Rock and Roll, Heroin, and Sweet Jane all off of Lou Reed RnR animal had great solos.

eric jonson cliffs of dover. Whole song is pretty much a solo.
Zakk wylde farm fiddlin. Another guitar song.
Anything G3 is great.
 
Many great ones here that I agree with, including anything by:
Robin Trower
Duane Allman
Neil Young

Also what comes to mind is when Robert Plant pulled out that violin bow and made his guitar sound possessed on Moby Dick IIRC. Also pretty much anything by Roy Buchanon.:banana:
 
I was always impressed by the lead Alvin Lee from Ten Years After played on "I'm Going Home'. both the Woodstock, and studio version. Also Alvin Lee's Version of "Woodchopper's Ball", off the Ten Years After-Undead album.
 
It may be campy, but Berton Averre's solo on The Knack's "My Sharona" is pretty darn good and certainly burned into our brains.
I also have a soft spot for Martin Barre's solo on Jethro Tull's "Aqualung"

Don't know if it's already mentioned, but Eddie van Halen's Eruption is what got me into playing guitar. Not that I'm any good. But that's not to blame on mr. Van Halen!
 
I will have to start with Andy Powell and Ted Turner. They have many but my favorites, and favorite side of an LP, is Live Dates- The King Will Come, Warrior, and Throw Down the Sword. Each note is full of emotion and thought out, not just speed playing. Others- Rory , Irish Tour '74, A Million Miles Away. Jimi, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Trower- Bridge, In This Place, etc. That whole album has stood the test of time. Cream- Spoonful and the list goes on and on
 
Steve Howe's Your Is No Disgrace and especially Perpetual Change on Yessons and Starship Trooper during the ABWH tour are the most complete pieces of solo guitar playing...they are melodic, rythmic, sometimes chaotic, keeping the skeleton melody and backbeat of the songs that they are a part of...Display of many influences...just beautiful work and powerful at the same time...
Definitely in a league of his own...
