Best small test speakers?

I'm looking for a tiny set of cheap but decent speakers to use as a test set on the workbench. Are Minimus 7s the king? Any others I should keep an eye out for?

I'd say use a pair you don't mind frying

I generally buy small pairs of speakers from higher quality micro systems at thrift stores for test purposes

I use Minimus 7's a lot, because they are often found cheap, they sound decent enough, and the metal cabinets allow them to get bumped and scraped.

If they're for the bench testing, look for speakers from those mini systems. Awia, Sony, ect. If you fry a set of $10.00 speakers, you won't care. Kill a $40.00 set, and ......... :dammit: :bash:

It's been said, but I'll echo it again. Buy sets that might explode during testing.

At my bench I have pair of car 2 ways 6.5's with a resistor paralleled to up the value. A ten ohm IIRC mounted in a piece of plywood tucked up in the rafters over the bench.

I use computer speakers....just re-wire them to make them passive (vs powered). You can pick them up at any thrift store for a couple of bucks.

I use Technics SB-F2. Its small and has a reset button at the rear that will trigger when a DC Volt is fed.

I used to use a pair of KLH Model 32s. The things saw a lot of DC, very loud pops and feedback, etc. They never missed a beat and always sounded good.

I agree with the others, get cheap mini system plastic cab speakers. They are only for testing, not critical listening. Who cares if you fry em. Most are garbage anyway.

The advice to get cheap speakers for sure makes sense...
I use Polk R150s that have been sitting around in my basement without better use.
I only do tube stuff so far - doesn't kill speakers that easily. If I ever run into a nice SS set I would start hooking up my 100w 8 Ohm load resistors and the scope prior to taking the risk of loading the speakers with DC

This is the only situation I can think of where a minimus 7 would not only excel but be the best bet.

i blew minimus 7's tweeters while using them as test speakers, but i've found other mismatched but perfectly suitable tweeters to replace. they're really perfect as test speakers.

The cheapest pieces of junk I can come up with are what I use. I have a pair of crappy Pioneer surround sound rear speakers that I got for free. They make noise, and if they blow up I won't care all that much. If they pass that test, it gets hooked to the main shop speakers, my JBL L-40's.
