Best subwoofers?your favorites

I'm limited in placement, due to the majority of the space being filled with the Infinity RS IIb and Magnepan 2.5R, so in the left corner behind the speakers is the JL audio, and in the right corner behind the speakers is the M&K sub.

Front door/hallways block any sub placement out in the room

I just wish (I know if wishes were fishes, we'd all have a fry), I could afford a second JL audio sub, because although not super pronounced, there is a difference in the bass from the JL to the M&K.

I'm not unhappy, by any stretch, this setup is by far the best system I've ever had, just wish the subs were matched.

Two matching subs wired in stereo,(M&K's)a third that goes deeper carrying both channels, (JLAudio) might be an option.

Have two Dayton Sub 1200's running with my Jamos, but it just so happens my Infinity sub in the room can also run at the same time if I wish. I don't usually run them all together, but I have forgotten to turn the Infinity off a time or two when firing up the Jamo/Dayton setup and the bass was earthquake inducing lol.

You can never have too many subwoofers, I have concluded. That'd sure be a hell of a setup.

Not, that spl is lacking now, I'm pretty sure my jl is set at 1 or 2 ( 7 or 8 on a clock face, where 6 is zero output) and my M&K is nearly that.
yesterday I was watching.... prometheus, and the bass was making every surface vibrate in my house, doors, windows, shelves, glassware in kitchen....

It's good to live in a house on a corner lot with only one neighbor (absolute opposite side from my living room). I lived in apts for too many years.

is two really better than one? How about 3? .....I have yet to experiment .......half dozen subs here. Never got around to dial any in. .....I will blend these in my rig one of these days. Under the impression no replacement for displacement. Waiting in the pile are a monster 18" velodyne and a will be Frankenstein a/d/s dual 10" ....missing the amplification. I have a cple of dedicated sub amps and figured can always integrate a hefty amplifier with an AVR....if needed. I have used canton and Sunfire subs as well.... 2 channel I don't bother with any .....

The velodyne hgs 18 is a great sub, really only need one in a large room but if you have a large dedicated room then 2 would be perfect.

Distributed bass is better, so 2 are better than 1, 3 better than 2, 4 better than 3 (especially if you can raise the 4th above the vertical mid point).

Aww what are Shame could have took the audio world by storm haha. Are sealed subs ? Clearer or just depends how high end a ported model is . My model of stereo integrity supposedly did better in a sealed box maybe it depends on the driver . Psb ultra 16” looks epic though wow 175 pounds? I gotta take look at specs more often .
Tapped horns look so complex to build no wonder no sub companies built them . Or whatever’s they are called, I’ve seen them in live music but folded horn not tapped .

Sealed subs often don’t have as much output as a ported sub, you will see most people using a sealed sub for stereo and a ported for movies . The new SVS subs the pb16 for instance (pb stands for ported box) have bungs that plug the port and they call that going into sealed mode . Now it all depends on the sub , some can do both adequately , my Velodyne Hgs 12 puts out 1,250 watts rms and has a high xmax and it’s fast for music and goes low and loud for movies . So for me it can do both good enough for me .

I had the 15in version and it got low but it just didn’t have adequate enough output for my room, strange given how beefy the amp was but it was a beautiful sub though .

My very much vintage, A/S 12 inch Visonik Sub, does 16 hz to 31 hz, and I used it for "Pipe Organ Albums" and it did/does as claimed. Course it also claims 15 to 50 watts minimum?? And I'd say ... good luck with that! Bi Amped (now) and a hundred watts and it's happy. There are at least a couple more of them on here, I've seen, vintage 1976 or so I think. I bought it new and a monster Philip Amp to power it, I lost the amp (ripped off!!!) ... but I still have the sub.

you must not have read my posts because I said often don’t go meaning usually don’t go as low . What I should have said was sealed subs usually don’t have as much output as ported . My sub is sealed and goes down to 16hz and puts out 85db at 16hz . So yeah I guess I’m that guy , who’s owned enough subs to know the difference

Aww no sweat man, I'll stand corrected. It's just to much, effort to drag the thing out to the living room and see what it puts out at 85 db??? The Mach ones and the LX 5's and there sub would kill me ... if I tried to push much pass 85 db in the living room and I have. Whole nother issue I suppose. But I take your point.

I very much prefer a sealed sub and have owned so many subs I can’t could but this current one I have is about perfect for me and can throw down pretty darn good , at 23hz it’s putting out 98db amd 32hz brings it to a whopping 118hz could be 120 if I remember correctly, point is it’s more than I need and I used to have two of them in my room . With all the technology today subs can do just about anything whether ported or sealed so if I was recommending a new sub to someone hell I tell them either ported or sealed would work .

Definitive supercube III, single 6.5" W 2 6.5" Passive Radiators. sort of sealed (note the passive radiators, so not sealed, but not ported)

and my brother has been 'borrowing' a Velodyne something something, 10" W 12" Passive Radiator for nearly ten years... guess it's his now.

So, it seems I prefer sealed or PR enclosures over ported.

When it comes to speakers,
My main room speakers, Infinity RS IIb, dual 12" sealed
My bedroom speakers, Infinity Renassaince 90, 10" Watkins dual voice coil woofer sealed
garage speakers, Canton Fonum 200, 10 or 12" woofers, sealed.
all three of my types of M&K speakers are also sealed.
Infinity RS 4b, dual 8" woofers, sealed
Infinity Qe 8" woofer, sealed

only my KEF LS-50s and my
Infinity Crescendo 3009 (and 3007) and my
infinty Infinitesimal IV are ported.

this is only my 'in use' speakers, excluding my Magnepans, since they don't have dynamic drivers at all.

I do agree, either type of bass enclosure can produce great, and low, bass.

In the last 5 years ... I just can't do that anymore very high spl's?? Or maybe because I moved the Mach One's from the garage to the living room ... 100 db +( because I could,) is now a bit much??

I don't know but at 85 db plus peaks (with a sub) I can feel the system in the whole house and uh it sounds just fine ... outside! And my amp is lofing?? It's kinda crazy!

And since the 70's I have always had preference towards A/S speakers and subs, I don't tend to care for ports and I consider passive radiators ... BS!

Well ... my KG 4's use a passive radiator ... and my other favorites my multiplicity of LX 5's have ports! And much to my surprise my Sansui SP1200's that I luv have not one but two ports and I luv them all!

But .... LOL with a sub for bass (ports or a passive radiator) ... does not matter! Sometimes the real world conflicts with what we happen to think is right??

But hey two subs, I have never done that ... I could, but the one 15 incher is a PIA, and I'm to lazy to drag another such beast into the living room and make space for it.
I'm just not convinced the benefits are worth the hassle?? I got other fish to fry as it were.
