Biggest Marantz?

2500 and 2600 are most powerful. But some said the best sound is 2325.

Of course someone would say whatever they have is best but the Marantz Lineage says it's the Holy Trinity of the 2385 followed by the 2500 and lastly the mighty 2600 and whether other more lowly number wise models sound better than these top 3 well hearing is in the Ears of each and every Listener to say or believe! The original post didn't ask for best but biggest " What is the TOTL Classic Marantz? Isn't it the 2500 and 2600? ,and the 3 TOTL stated are just that:)

That's going by the top three most powerful and most expensive but those three were all pretty much available at the same time so technically, only one could have been considered Marantz's TOTL receiver as TOTL ratings are generally considered period specific. The 2325 on the other hand was the TOTL from '74 thru '76 when it had no peers.

The 2600 was made from '78 thru '80, the 2500 from '77 thru '79 and the 2385 from '77 thru '78. The chassis on the 2500 was 1/8" larger on one side than that of the 2600 but the 2600 weighed almost a pound more. Output-wise from a watts per channel into 8 ohms the 2600 was rated at 300 wpc, the 2500 at 250 wpc, the 2385 at 185 wpc and the 2325 at 125 wpc so the 2600 rates "biggest" in that category as well. I guess it depends on what you mean by "biggest" and TOTL. Now "best", I don't think I'm ready to get into that one!! :)

2600 was "totl"- VERY expensive to buy one, most people settle for the 2500 or the 2385 cause they can be found. Any time a 2600 comes up it's sub 5 digits.

I agree. I wasn't sure if I wanted to put the 2385 in that category, as they are getting... a little too common.

The 2600 was their most expensive and highest powered receiver but not necessarily their best sounding. I would pick the 18, 19, and even the 2230 for receivers.

In terms of size the 9 is without peer from the company, remember, it takes 2.

For best sounding amps most old timers who have had the 5s give them the nod while the 500 for a preamp it is literally a tossup between the Consollette and 7 while the 7t gets my nod for sale.

For tuner 10/10b for tube and 20 for sale. For the tuner/preamp, the only choice is the 24 and for turntable hands down goes to the SLT12 (not 12u).

There is a 2285B going for more than $700 on eBay right now. It looks like a nice one, 85 or 94 wpc depending on who you believe. But somebody tell me: how much of that price is for the name alone?

Agreed but then the 2385 at somewhere between 5000-6000 Units made is still for it's age getting harder to find as well:):thmbsp:

Brian mentioned 'em in passing -- I'd say the top dog Marantz was and will always be the Model 9 amplifier; PPP EL34 monoblocks with timeless, unassailable cosmetics to boot.

... but, I'd be happy with an 8B (the odds of my finding, and affording a pair of Model 9s are arbitrarily small as the mathematicians might phrase it).

In the tube world yes, 9's are the Cadillac's. I think Marantz built only one stereo tube amp the 8 and then the B which was a 5 watt increase in power- they look the same. 2 weeks and i'll have mine finally.

Maybe yes then again maybe no!
Once more OP asked "What is the TOTL Classic Marantz? Isn't it the 2500 and 2600? " and I assumed this was about Receivers?
What some might find as to their preferences may not be what others would choose but it should remain within the realm of the OP's question about 2500-2600,nes't pas?:thmbsp:
