Birds - Post 'em up

Downy woodpecker from my after-work decompression walk yesterday. They move quickly and are seldom not obscured by branches, so 10 images yielded just this one that was remotely close to being in focus.

Took a drive this morning with the intent of photographing a mass of snowgeese that pass the winter in the vicinity, but did not see them. I did see a couple hundred Tundra swans, but nowhere that would make an interesting pic. So I decided to make another stop nearby, and on the way I saw the geese, but again not in a photogenic scene. My final destination was worth it, though I did not see geese there. I got Short Eared owls instead. It'll take me awhile to go through all the pics- I got nearly 1800 images today, so I imagine I'll be sharing more in the near future.

Here are the last of the pics from the other day. There are a whole bunch more that are decent, but are really only more of same so I won't put them up. This particular owl was very active, and I believe most of my pics are the same bird though there were at least 3 in the area, as well as a couple Northern Harriers.

Got to see a gaggle o' snow geese this morning. Would one call that a "blizzard" ? A fellow I chatted with briefly estimated there were 10k -20k birds in this particular field.

Two more from this morning: an American Kestral, and a male Northern Harrier, aka Grey Ghost. About 10 mins up the road from the geese (same place I got the owls last week). I wasn't able to get very close to either, so both pics are cropped pretty heavily.

Male Anna's Hummingbird. These are hard to photograph! They don't sit still for very long. Also, one does not need to saturate the colors when processing an image of one of these; they are VIVID when they flash their gorget.

While walking down at the lagoon the other day, I saw this guy perched up in a tree.

Sitting by the pond yesterday and a robin popped up on the creek, watching as Emma and I feed the goldfish

I was watching early morning video of the pond and I spotted a red blur. Downloaded the video and ran through it frame by frame ... a wingless red & grey rocket!
I'm not sure its a cardinal - Emma thinks its a parrot. These are the best VLC screen caps I could get from the PondCam.





Just before the blur flew by, there was a pretty-sure Cardinal arcing through the side of the screen towards the creek.
Cardinals are pretty competitive and territorial - very fussy when another enters what they think is their space.
