Looks like a miniature humming bird in flight, that was my first thought.

But it is actually called a Humming-bird Hawk-moth

First time I've seen a Kingfisher in a couple years. I wanted a picture of her as she took flight, but she waited until I couldn't hold the camera any longer before taking off (I seldom take a tripod on my walks)

Indeed, on one of our trips to B'more. I saw the livecam before we went and that made it one of our stops while visiting.

Sadly, they abandoned the nest this year for the first time after losing their eggs in a storm. (they took the webcam offline for the season)

It would have been my fifth year photographing their offspring.

This happened suddenly and I was not ready for it (I thought that he was just flying off to alight on his tree), hence the poor composition.

Those cranes have yellow eyes and when they get mad/upset they turn red... that bird is orange and on the way to a full on freak out ! (I grew up on a game refuge that had 30,000 of those beasties every winter, caught and banded hundreds of them they can get over 3 feet tall).

Every time I leave the house through the garage, these critters appear out of nowhere, begging for food.
The individual pictured came over for a long scratch. He was tame,
Perhaps big birds simply disliked being handled by you in such a fashion.
Even without a food bribe, they are quite pettable.
But how bad can a Mopar 440 lover be?

The individual pictured came over for a long scratch. He was tame,
Perhaps big birds simply disliked being handled by you in such a fashion.
Even without a food bribe, they are quite pettable.
But how bad can a Mopar 440 lover be?

Well we used rocket nets to trap them, then untangled them one bye one from the net (holding on to their beak !) then put the bands on their legs- yeah they were not happy with us!
