While not from that era. The Yamaha NS4 is an excellent choice. It was used in studios after mixing was done to see how the music sounded with regular speakers.
Look into the KLH Model Thirty-Two. The KLH 32 is a nice compact 8-inch two-way with a very pleasant East-Coast sound. The woofer surrounds are cloth, too, so they don't require refoaming which is an added bonus. The veneer is real wood, and they are pretty small compared to what passed as a bookshelf speaker at the time.

I'm running stacked KLH32s in my small (10x12) home office. I recapped them and resealed the woofer surrounds with rubber cement and they are amazing - especially the bass, which is 'way better than I expected from the size of the woofers.
Ill put in another one for the ditton 15. Slim book shelf with pretty decent bass, thanks to the passive radiator.
Forgot to mention it in my other post.
I suggest Allison Acoustics A4, if you can get them, a great sound in a small package. JBL L19 or L26 & L36 have great 70's sound for rock. Love those Dynacos, too. Genesis were pretty decent. And I like Radio Shack Minimus 7 for a great sound from a very small speaker.
AR 4X, AR 4aX, AR2X (close to the KLH 6's in size and quality. I think the KLH 5's, and AR 2 aXs are 3-way speakers if not mistaken. I guess it depends on you room size. We say "bookshelf" and indeed they can be but the KLH 6's, 5's, AR 2aX's etc are larger bookshelf/ AR 4x's are compact and definitely worth consideration.....Good luck with your search. You're not giving us too much insight as to your listening habits.
What music do you listen to? How loud?
What is your music source? (vinyl, CD, tape, iPod, etc.)
What amp will you be driving your speakers with? Many "East Coast" speakers require a good amount of power.
That being said, you sound like you have a VERY small room. Personally, I would be looking into a headphone solution.
+1 on the KLH Model 32. The Fives, Sixes and Seventeens may have been called bookshelf speakers back in the day, but they are really too big for my bookcase.
