i have a set of OPT's from a GE console amp i believe. it ran EL84's in SE. can that iron be used for 6V6's in SE?

Yep, that should work quite well. They use about the same impedance, and have similar idle currents as well. I've interchanged 6V6 and EL84 transformers regularly (both SE and PP), with good results.

Gordon.

6V6 amp with Dynaco iron

Here is salvaged Dynaco SCA-35 iron from 6BQ5/EL84 amp on new chassis.

The Dynaco iron from that amp is very high quality and sounds fantastic.

The 6V6 push pull ultra-linear design is cathode bias and driven by 6SN7 driver/phase splitter as I prefer the octal tubes over the skinny types!

Regards, Ron

im just asking because i have a pair of OPT's that i think came out of a zenith or GE that had EL84's in SE. i have a pair of those bendix redbank 6v6 kicking around so the thought crossed my mind about building something after i get done with the rebuild on the masco 17.

Why not? Do it up in "breadboard" style (wire it up loose on the bench, so you can check it out), to test how it sounds. Worst case, you don't like it... then build something else. With something as simple as this should be, it shouldn't be too hard to just tack the circuit together, and have a listen, before committing to cutting up a chassis...

Regards.
Gordon.

I love the layout of that amp Ron. Power supply off on one side, audio stuff on the other... switch in line with the PS, volume in line with the audio... very simple and elegant. :tresbon:

I've run it the other way, 6BQ5 equivilant in a Maggie 6V6 amp (175 ciruit), and to me, the change was a good one. I'll be interested to hear what you think about going the other direction.:scratch2: Hey! Why not try 6AQ5s too. They are a giant killer IMHO.

i like the old bigger tubes thats why i was thinking of using 6v6's. i wanted to put a pair of 5992 bendix tubes to use. i cant seem to find a stereo SE 6v6 amp for a reasonable price so i'm pondering putting one together.
