Can Naval Jelly cure this rust ?

I may have met my match here --

was wondering if Naval Jelly could tackle this rust on the fisher 400 chassis .. given repeated applications)...is Naval Jelly safe for cad-plated chassis ?

Might take the rust, but the pitting will remain. Maybe POR-15 will do it.

Agreed. Nothing is going to get rid of the pitting, about the best it will do is stabilize the rust so it stops spreading. I'd probably wire brush that to get as much loose off and use naval jelly or Evaporust to stop it. Both will leave a black material behind (iron phosphate) instead of the red rust (iron oxide). Evaporust isn't quite as nasty as the phosphoric acid that is the active ingredient in naval jelly and most other rust converters. You'd probably have to soak it into a rag and cover with plastic wrap to keep it wet so it can do it's thing.

There are options for refinishing, but flattening the inherent pitting in the above example will require "bodywork." After you "neutralize" the rusted area with topical applications, wire brushing can help. Then, you will have to decide how original looking the item you will accept.

THX for the diagnosis .. not caring too much about pitting if that is the cost of rust removal...

so with no treatment, the rust spreads ? How does the rust affect the electrical performance - doesn't the circuitry rely on reliable chassis ground ?

My guts should have perforated decades ago with the amount of Coca Cola, and "weld yer eyelids to the back of yer head" strength Black Coffee I drink. Seriously the phosphoric acid in Coke is highly diluted, but strong enough to clean automotive batteries of the green/yellow blooms on the terminals, leaving near bright lead contacts. A light wipe with a battery brush is all that's needed. Have a Carburetor Fire (WTF is a Carburetor?" say the under 45 crowd. It like a manual transmission. Too complicated for Common Core educated brats and is also considered a theft deterrent device, especially with a manual choke), put yer thumb over top of a coke, shake vigorously, and spray it at the fire. The CO2 in the spray will, along with the liquid, put the fire in most cases. Better than a dry chem extinguisher and 1/10th the mess.

Coke and steel wool work winders when applied liberally with elbow grease.

I used to clean rusted bike parts with a little oxalic acid in water, was a main ingredient in deck cleaners at the hardware store.

Funny, Larry. Yeah, "Coke" has always been my stomach liner "cleaner" of choice. I still tip one of those mini-cans once in a while, but I try to stay away from soda in favor of iced tea (great trade off - sugar instead of phosphoric acid - right). I usually go for Isopropyl Alcohol when I want to clean something on/in a chassis. But man that amount of gunk that Kapp has is a nightmare. I wish him godspeed with it. Just looking at it turns my stomach.

Contact points need to be rust and paint free, bare metal is best. Corrosion is a poor conductor.

I use Krud Kutter from Wally World on my heavily rusted projects. It also contains phosphoric acid and will do about the same as Navel Jelly. I apply it with cotton swabs. It's slow going but if you are dedicated you can get all the rust off. Just takes a lot of concentration and time.

i worked at an ice cream store in my high school years, and we served fountain drinks, including coke. if someone bought a coke and sat with it at the marble tables we had (or at the marble counter) for any real length of time, and spilled down the sides so it was between the glass and the marble, it wouldn't take long until the marble was etching (no amount of sealer would stay on for long enough to protect the marble). we had one table in the back that was so bad it was actually uneven, and you could feel the grain of the marble where the phosphoric acid had dissolved the smooth surface.

and you've heard/seen the tooth experiment? we did that in gradeschool with someone's tooth, and it was gone in a week. just coke.

while i still like a good mexicoke now and again, it's one of the ones i don't drink often anymore, with these two things in mind

as for that rust, i'd use a dremel to grind back to clean metal, or to nearly rust-free metal. i mean, if you have to do that much surgery you might as well get it all off. then hit it with a rag soaked in evaporust covered in saran wrap, clean again with a green scrubby, then wipe down with anhydrous isopropyl to get rid of the water...once that evaporates, hit it with a nice coat of paste wax, and bob's your uncle.

Finally - an excuse to justify a dremel (!) --

I have a better understanding of what I am up against -- but I fear the cad plating warnings ... aerosol cadmium dust...cancer - Hazmat..I know it can be done reasonably safely outside with proper PPE ...

But - I have a nice case and I know this puppy won't ever get to shiny, like some of the fine examples I see on this forum .. so, besides basic cleaning, which I have done with compressed air and chip brush+ DAWN, why go to all the additiona trouble at this stage? I still cannot verify if it even works...the tubes passed a continuity test, and no tubes are missing ...all I need now is a fuse and bayonet-style fuse-holder cap...

the unit was a gift from a neighbor, and I would like to first establish that it works in some fashion....

My brother actually did the tooth experiment -- wow ..and he and I drank too much Coke..
