Canton Speaker Capacitor and Coil Reference Thread

James et al,

Does anyone have the crossover schematic for Canton Karat 20's? I have 2 pairs of CT 800's that I was able to re cap after reading this thread & I just got 2 pairs of Karat 20's at an estate sale. Any information or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bill, and welcome to Audiokarma. I don't have the schematic for the Karat 20 but I just now wrote Canton's customer service and asked if they are still available. If they supply them I'll post them for you.

Nice set of Canton's that you have there. The CT 800 and Karat 20 are some that I have intensely wanted to try out but haven't done so yet.

As I said, when/if I get an answer from Canton I'll let you know.

That is exceedingly kind of you and greatly appreciated. I can state that the CT800's are wonderful sounding speakers to my ears. I also can state that the Karat 20's for being diminutive 2 ways also have a great presence & smooth sound with a surprisingly robust low end for such a small enclosure.

I have a partial help for you. Canton just wrote me that they no longer have the schematics for the Karat 20, but they did send me pdf's for the Karat 30.

I'm hoping that they will still be useful for you as my experience with the 3-way speakers is that within the Karat and CT series they are identical or nearly so. So hopefully the schematics for the 2-way 30 will be similar to the 20 and still be useful for you so I'm attaching them here. There are 3 sub-series and all have small differences.

Looking them over I found 3 new caps for the list:
1319 = 1.5µF/100v
1611 = 6.8µF/100v
2525 = 8.2µF/100v

Fyi:
Drossel = coil (choke),
Wiederstand = resistor,
Kondens. EL = Electrolytic capacitor,
Kondens. Fo = Foil capacitor.

Thank you very much, I actually opened one speaker that was giving me fits due to lack of high frequencies. It ended up being a loose wire to the tweeter, re soldered & back in business. I took an initial picture of the crossover & between that and your diagrams I should be able to order the new capacitors I need. I also got photos of the back of both drivers. Hopefully this helps others. Respectfully, Bill

Ok Bill! You are good to go. That 1228 39µF Roederstein even shows it's value, rare in a Canton. And the 6.8µF is a MKT film, no need to replace.

I have some Canton Karat 300's. I cannot find the Wego Capacitor Value for part number 1317 anywhere. Here's what I'm showing in the Karat 300 crossover:

3779=6.8uf
2520=47uf
1317= Measures 6.640uf .24 ESR on one, 6.58uf and .28 ESR on the second, cap says 1317 5S and bipolar on it.
2379=15uf

Any ideas for what 1317's values should be?

He is, he is awesome I made sure to tell him he is well loved by AudioKarma. Is there any desire for me to share the measurements of the defunct caps that I am replacing just to assess drift? Your assessment of 20% drift was almost dead on, if Lukas had not delivered the capacitor values I literally was going to knock off 20% off of my measured value. If you add 20% to 5.6 the legit value it comes in at around 6.7 uf. So close.
 
If you want to post the measurement results go right ahead, more info can't hurt. Your results with the 1317's are in line with what I've been seeing.

So post recap I will have to say these are my general impressions having owned a lot of Braun/ADS products:
1. The bass is tighter on Karat 300's than on my ADS L880's but not as tight as the L710's.
2. The Karat 300's are slightly brighter than similarly sized ADS products I own.
3. Karat's have slightly less midrange than similarly sized ADS products I own.
4. Build quality is similar.
5. Crossover on ADS has a lot more film caps than the Karat's so there is more quality there but as a counter, the ADS caps are usually in a sandwich between two PCB boards making them hard to get to where as the Kanton is just screwed to the back of the cabinet and super easily accessible and removable.

They definitely have more similarities than differences in my opinion.
 
Here are the measurements from the wego capacitors removed from each speaker for reference:
2520: 56.73uf 0.13 ohm ESR 1.6% loss; 58.61, 0.13, 1.3%
3779: 10.28uf 0.28 ohm ESR 2.5% loss; 9.265uf, 0.31 ohm ESR, 2.6% loss
2379: 17.25uf 0.17ohm ESR 1.5% loss; 17.47uf, 0.17ohm ESR, 1.6% loss
1317: 6.640uf 0.24 ohm ESR , 6.58uf and 0.28 ESR

For 35yo the speaker in the photo looks great! Enjoy them, they are very nice little speakers.
The powder on the woofer back is a little bit of corrosion residue. You don't want to breathe it but when I see that I go out on my balcony where it's well ventilated and brush the stuff off with a stiff brush.

For the 1104 5.6µF use a Jantzen CrossCap film cap...

James -- I'm new to to all of this really, audio, capacitors, etc. Wanted to get your direction please. Bought some Quinto 510's and should be here by end of week. I have tried to find the capacitors in the US and not having a one-stop-shop luck. I am looking at Hifi Collective to get sourcing. I see they carry your recommendations on:

1104 = (001-0254) - 5.6uF 400Vdc Jantzen Cross Cap Capacitor
1102 = (ECAP70-130) - 22uF 70V Mundorf ECap AC PLAIN electrolytic capacitor
1101 = (ECAP50-040) - 82uF 50V Mundorf ECap AC PLAIN electrolytic capacitor

My question is on 2381, if you were not able to get the Monacor MKT, which one of the below, if either, would you go with?
(001-0266) - 12uF 400Vdc Jantzen Cross Cap Capacitor. $4.90usd
(MKP-115) - 12uF 250V Mundorf MCap MKP Capacitor. $7.30 usd

Also, would you bother replacing the resisters on the cross over too?

Hi BrettK, I am very sorry to take so long to reply, I missed seeing your question until today.

I have used a lot of those Jantzen CrossCaps with good results. Lately for series caps in the tweeter section I have switched to the Mundorf MCaps. The less expensive CrossCap is more than good enough.

I haven't been replacing the resistors except when they are defective but when I do need to I use some of those Jantzen 5w MOX resistors that HiFi collective carries. They are small enough to fit.

Note: 24 May 2020: Now that I have built up a fair amount of Canton speaker schematics, and since questions have come up in the speaker forum about coil values, I am taking advantage of the Subscriber privilege of being able to edit posts and will be adding crossover coils in the 1st post in this thread.

I will be listing the air-core and ferrite-core items separately for clarity.

After recommendations of my friend I bought a pair of carat 300.
I opened the bass driver to check crossovers and found that only one capacitor at both crossovers seems out of margin. But I do not now what it should be and we do not have in the list at this thread. Code :2101

Any guess based on the measured values.

Moreover crossovers are labeled as LE500 :). I saw by Google ing many LE500 crossover none is smilar to mine. Did you meet similar situation.
