Castle Acoustics Seven

Have come across a pair of these w/a replacement non-Castle woofer in one speaker for 150.00- the cabs look great was thinking looking into them- anybody here familiar with this English manufacturer? Thanks, Steve

Do you mean the Severn? Which one, the 2 or the 2e?

Severn- sorry about the typo- and the 1st Severn b4 the II etc; nice book-matched veneer on the cabs, late 80's or early 90's I think-

Castles have a very good reputation, and because they had a cabinetry factory, their cabinets are often a step up from the alternatives-- all, or almost all, have real wood veneer. But because they also made most of their own drivers, you may have a very hard time finding a correct replacement. I don't know the model so don't know if, in fact, this is an issue with them, but I would suggest thinking hard about it before making a not negligible investment -- its not a huge amount of money, but it could buy you other very nice speakers.

I saw the same CL ad, it's been reposted a couple times. I did some quick research and came to the conclusion that sourcing a new woofer would be sufficiently expensive/time consuming that it wouldn't be worth it.

thanks for the input, did a little looking around for a woofer as well, no luck so far- maybe he'll take less; those small towers would fit into my family room pretty well, the wife might possibly like them as well (!) and they were 1400$ new (!!) BTW, from the snow capped (way snow capped today) white mtns of NH not the bay state- Steve

Don't get too caught up in "new price", I've seen $3500 gear that's only 6 years old get reposted again and again for <$200. If I was going to make an offer I would seriously lowball (like $50) because it wouldn't surprise me if he hasn't gotten any better offers. I would then do some serious research and try to find a matched pair of equivalent woofers from a place like Parts Express.

I agree, Castles are not that common but they can be had cheap when they appear used. I tried to sell a pair of Severn 2s on CAM and after 2 or 3 months I gave up and sold them for $200. The cabs had a few marks (shame because they were damn pretty speakers) but they had the original drivers in mint shape.
