I’m working on a pioneer PD-701 that is not reading the disc. The discs are properly installed and the lenses is in place. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks, John

Did you properly clean the lens yet? I've resurrected more than a few cd players just by doing that.

The long story is this; I did a close inspection and found that the lens at one time had fallen out and someone put it back in place and glued it. I removed the lens to make sure there was no obstruction. I then cleaned it, both sides, and put it back in with a scant amount of glue to hold it in place. The result was the same as it was when I first tested it. It will pick up each disc and then stop. The lens move and the disc does not spin.

If the unit is spinning up and then stopping without giving any track information, then the chances are that it is trying to read the disc but can't 'see' it properly. Quite often the lens focusing coils have weakened over time and the laser assembly needs to be replaced. Most of these are actually still available as lots of CD players from different makers shared the same laser units. They are normally quite simple to replace - I've done this a few times myself.
It will take a bit of tracing, but it might be a Sony or Panasonic unit as they were both major manufacturers of Japanese laser assemblies.

I suppose it’s worse than that. It doesn’t even spin. Thanks for your response, John. I’ll look into finding the assembly.

Looks like laser focus comes before spinning the motor in the sequence...
