Cerwin Vega speaker help needed

I looked, just googling "vintage cerwin" and looking at every old cerwin that has a midrange that looks smaller in relation to the tweeter. The U321 is the only one of that era that has what appears (on some of them anyway) to have the correct midrange size.
 
Cerwin was pretty notorious for swapping around all kinds of components, and having a lot of models basically identical to each other, which made swapping stuff between them easy. I'll keep looking to try to figure it out!
 
More speakers that look (in SOME pictures) to have the smaller mid, U351, CH 504R, CH 324R. Simply Speakers sells a replacement midrange, for many different models including the AT series, that I believe will fit your cabinets. I am guessing that whatever mid came in the models I listed above (351/324/504) is the mid that cerwin originally put in the cabinets you have, but so far I can't find which one that is. I am guessing the Simply Speakers replacements would fit. Actually, there's a LOT of cerwin mids with that bolt pattern, although all newer models than what I'm guessing you have.

I think that the sealed back Simply Speakers mids requires a cutout that is 4"

Did go with the Springfield set. Shipped quick and not bent. Nice pinkish orange and not real thick/stiff. Now I have to watch all the videos and get comfortable with it.
Still can't figure out which mids are correct for my 4 1/2" screw spread and 3 5/8" baffle hole. Might try replacing the 8 ohm optimus with 4-ohm CV I have, VSW 12".
 
Refoam went well, speakers sound nice in the HED1230 cabs. The glue was a little fast setting for me at first when I tried to attach the surround to the cone, so I learned it is very important to have the foam perfectly aligned to the cone before you touch the two together. The VC centering was pretty easy using the tone generator I downloaded on my old Iphone.
Bass is smooth and sounds nice. I was able to dial back the bass more now than I did with the model 26's, probably because of these 4 ohm woofers? My "8 ohm" model 26 cabs show 6.7 ohm on the ohm meter, the HED1230 (with the 4 ohm W121-4) show 5.1 ohm on the ohm meter. The woofers do not pass through the crossover and are connected directly off the connectors on the back of the crossover. I'm guessing that is where the ohm reading is coming from when I connect the meter to the back of the cabs?
I'm driving with a Mcintosh MA5100, so I'm not expecting there will be an issue with the 4 ohm cabs. Plus, I am able to dial back the bass more now, so I'm guessing that helps the amp a little.
I enclosed the backs of the open basket Optimus mids with duct tape, so I will run like that until I can someday figure out what the correct midrange speakers should be. Those are probably not as efficient as the CV, but they work for now.

The ohm reading comes from everything connected to where the meters is connected.

You did a recone, not just a refoam?

DR, hope you got your cabinets squared away. I ended up installing a set of W121-4 (4 ohm) in the 1230's and they sound nice. I find I am able to dial back the bass control on the amp and get plenty of bass. I put the "covered" COH tweeters in and they fit perfectly through the "keyhole" in the baffle. I was not able to figure out which midrange fit the 3 5/8 baffle cutout I have, so I kept the Optimus (for now) and used duct tape to "enclose" the basket. My ohm meter shows 5.1 ohm at the speaker terminals.

After I downloaded the tone generator on my phone, I gave myself a hearing test and discovered I can't hear anything over 13MHz and under 45Hz, at least out of the tone generator. I don't know that I am really even able to tell what a good sounding speaker is any more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did a mockup of a 6" OD speaker with 4 1/2" mounting circle and 3 5/8" baffle hole. This shows the relationship of the midrange driver to the other 2 in the baffle. It might be that when I ask someone to measure their speaker (or tell me the hole size I need), I'm getting rounded off numbers and bad info back. I will have to wait until someone has a mid from a 1230 that I can get ahold of. I don't think there is any switcheroo stuff going on with these cabs other than he put the Optimus in and disposed of the originals.
