My son started playing, and I'm trying to catch up. Is Chess.com a good place to practice? I have several books already (Levy Rozman and Lars Schandorff).

Thanks!

If you can play on a phone, ChessPro and Shredder are cheap and have good engines.

I play in the upper 1400 range and they keep me challenged.

I don't know about Chess.com, sorry, I have used - Red Hot Pawn.com - but it's changed a lot since I last played on there.

Chess.com is actually fun. I thought it was going to be like math class all over again.

It was a good way to kill the day, as I had no power (the electric company was changing all the poles). All I had was my phone, 5G, and a flashlight.

I like the challenge mode, where you have x-number of steps to checkmate. That helps my end-game, which is not my strength.

Yes, I have been on Chess.com for several years. I have given my Son and Daughter Memberships. They are now both better than I.
Definitely do the Puzzles, and the Lessons. The Bots are a lot of fun.

If you want to play let me know.

I'm a noob. A starting all over again noob. Perhaps, as soon as I get these training wheels off the old man.

The game seems more fun now, with phone and computer access. At least, so far...

;)

Ha, I am not very good. My kids just learned and they wipe the floor with me. Whenever you feel up to it.

Levy Rozman is good, I started out watching him a lot on youtube. One of my favorite youtube teachers is :
. Remote Chess Academy . For some reason I can relate to what he is teaching.

I really like Levy. His beginner's book is a very good starting point! Easy to digest with a touch of good humor.

I also found a nice used copy of Lars Schandorff's "Playing The Caro-Kann." I need all the help I can get with defense and playing the black pieces.

I've had a chess.com account for longer than I can remember, though I've never really enjoyed playing online. I drop by a few days a week to do the three free puzzles, take a lesson, check the news and sometimes catch a "Titled Tuesday" game if one or more of the big guns are playing.

As for the online instructors / commentators, I enjoy Levy a lot, but for someone relatively new to the game I'd suggest IM Nelson Lopez' channel "Chess Vibes." His "Beginner To Master Chess Rating Climb" videos are quite good and have probably helped my game more than any other YouTube channel or book for that matter. He has a way of explaining his thinking behind each move that reaches me and maybe it'll do the same for you.

My daughter's boy friend is rated a 2300.
He teaches and the kids, are in first place in several grades in NYC.

They're visiting me in two weeks. :)
Whoa! 2300! That's an FIDE Grand Master!

Does he play in worldwide tournaments?
