Classic High-End Gear

My salvation is closing the house up and listening to my vintage gear.
Mcintosh c26 and a mcintosh c28 pre amps with dynaco st 70's.
Altec 604e speakers, Altec A5's vintage jbl 's I've built ,Altec custom model 19's, vintage Bozaks.
fisher 500c, fisher x101b.
My hobby and passion is vintage gear, I may die penny less but will have no debt and a very enjoyable life inside these walls.
Buy vintage walk the path less traveled.
 
Good gravy there is some incredible gear here!! I read the entire thread and my head is spinning.

I know it had been mentioned but I would like to toss my 301 in the mix. Not mentioned before, that I could see, is an SME 3012 arm and SPU GT cart.

Not to mention the "classic high end" Sade.. :thumbsup:

Hell. Its 2 tone golden oldie....still waiting for someone to trade information with that has one. . Dont know whats worth. But wouldn't sell it.

Minty goodness. Have little knowledge about them other that reading here and there about them.
 
My Infinity Quantum 4 speakers after repairing the drivers and enhancing the stuffing. I was very lucky to have inherited these, a definite upgrade to my previous Infinity SM-122 speakers. Five of six drivers needed repair or replacement, but the exterior wood veneer only needed a good cleaning. I was also lucky to also have the grilles in decent condition.

Can the passive pre in the L-510 explain why my Luxman sounds a bit on the neutral side vs lush/rich compared to my other vintage receiver from Pioneer/Sansui/Marantz?

The L-510 will deliver deep rich bass, but only when the source music calls for it.
Make sure you have the 'loudness' OFF on the receivers when comparing.
You may be used to colored music, if so, A passive pre may not be for you.
Connect the 'pre-out' on one of your receivers to the 510's 'main in' ( you will have to move the switch to processing on ) and see what it sounds like,
If it sounds thin with the receiver preamp there is likely fault with the 510.
 
I connected my Tube-pre into the L-510, Aux input and the sound was rich (read as "colored" ???). I did find the L-510 on its own spectacular on female voices and string instruments (EDM, Trance and hip hop look elsewhere :) )

Do you know why Luxman decided on a Passive pre ?

One less stage in the signal path, s/n 110db total, after pre AND amp. ;) It wasn't just Luxman doing this back then.

Also keep in mind, with a active preamp it is the pre that is driving the amp.
With a passive preamp it is the source that has to drive the amp, so the 510 needs a source with a robust output, unless you're using the phono section.

Back in 1985 to 1989 I was in Ajax and visited a family owned audio shop on Brock St Whitby (gone long ago) listened to a pair of Infinity RS2's that sounded pretty nice.
