Cleaning a receiver

How do I clean the gunky/sticky stuff on the inside of a thrift shop find?

I just found a can of CRC QD contact cleaner "plastic safe". Good enoght?

Isopropyl alcohol would probably work and is cheaper. CRC QD looks safe, but it does contain petroleum distilates, so be careful using it.

Alcohol, Q-tips, a 1/2" paint brush with the bristles cut down so they are fairly stiff, shop towels, and a LOT OF PATIENCE!

Blow it down with Air first, then vacuum with a bruxh on the end.

Using the alcohol and brush paint a section and work on it until it's clean. Turn on it's side and high to low. Use the Q-tips for itty-bitty access areas.

DO NOT GET ANY CLEANER IN, ON, within 1/2" of the TUNER CAPACITOR. Just blow it out.

Lastly. Use a non abrasive metal polish to shine it up. Or not depending on your preference.

Just because I have also thought of cleaning a couple of my receivers (and I don't know what everything is exactly in there) what is this part that you speak of (tuner capacitor)?

The Tuning capacitor is the 1/2 moon shaped fin assembly, with a tuning wheel on one end. Follow the string from the dial face to the wheel.
