Coffee

My new toy. Just got it yesterday. I'm needing the hell out of it today after a night of creek licker. It's replacing my old Delonghi, that was 10 to 12 years old, that still works great. Got it off New egg back then for around $150. Made great espresso and just wouldn't die. So I'm gonna box it up and use it as a spare.
Been looking for one for a couple years now and this fit the bill perfect. Came close to a Breville. Just to much money for show.
This one has no bells and whistles. No gages, no fancy lights, just a nice clean look. All the money went to making espresso. Uses a thermo block, has a 58 mm, portafilter and makes a puck. The old one didn't.
I figured this would make alot stronger shot. Being it takes 2.25 scoops to fill the portafilter.....the other took only 1.5 scoops. But this espresso was a lot smoother. I doubt I will use the steam wand. Never did with my old one. I'm not a milk guy. Just give me a couple shots. That crema is good enuf for me. I like Calphalon stuff too. I already have a deep fryer by them, several pots and pans and a couple knives. All good top quality stuff for the price. Nothing but good things to say about their stuff. Just don't buy it from their sight or you will pay more. Discounts everywhere.

Those that buy fresh-roasted whole bean or roast your own, do you bloom your grinds before brewing?

If not, give it a try. Generally, the fresher the bean the more benefit there is.

Of course we bloom, 30 sec. Then, using a Melodrip, pouring approx.40 g 5 times to get to the
target weight/time. Everything weighed & times. what else would you like to know?

We have an entire cupboard devoted to all sorts of ways to brew coffee.

My wife and I have tried, and used, several of the brands mentioned here. Some of our favorites have been Gevalia, Barnies, Green Mountain, and Dunkin' Donuts. (We both dislike Starbucks.) But our current favorite/standard is the Costco/Kirkland Columbian. Unfortunately, there's no way to know who makes that for them.

As for brewing, we use a simple Mr Coffee, but we also fill a thermal carafe with hot water at the beginning of brewing, then transfer it over when done. I can still have a nice hot cup 'o java later in the day without it being "cooked."

CoffeeMate in the morning. Bailey's in the afternoon.

Ok, ok. That's a lie. I'm retired. It's Bailey's all day. :D

So yesterday I was ordering a part for my Behmor 1600 Plus roaster and look what I stumbled upon, their new Jake 1 kg drum roaster.
jake_3.jpg

About $2500, Artisan ready and electric. Compared to the HotTop Artisan ready for $1600 or the Huky 500T for about $2500 I may have found my next roaster. Behmor's support has been great the 6 or 7 years I've had my machine and the Jake by all appearances is a scaled down version of a 10 kg Diedric or similar. It was scheduled for availability this summer so who knows when at this point.

Just wanted to give a bit of a history lesson. I'm drinking a shot out of my sacred 1999 US Open, shot glass at Pinehurst # 2. Payne Stewart won it in June, then died in a plane crash that October. Hard to believe it was 21 years ago. I had such a great time. Above is a link to the course. My souvenir from the tourney. It's sacred to me. I rarely drink out of it.
That is the year I learned I don't like craft beers. I can still taste the hops I tried to get down. Just give me a good Anheuser Busch pilsner. Ice cold.

The last pic is of me rinsing out 2
glasses at once.

Oh by the way, the espresso shot I drink 90% of the time is the above. It's called a Macchiato.
It's just a pulled shot, with a little bit of cream added. I also put in a teaspoon of sugar.

I’m not sure. It was shutting down like it was unplugged randomly. That coupled with the serial number of my older unit told them it was the board.

Switched back to better coffee recently when my daughter said my coffee tasted like the filter. Digging the counter culture.

Wow, Some of you are hardcore! I'm still starting my mornings with Chock Full 'o Nuts in my classic Revereware 4-cup Drip-o-lator. When I make coffee, I don't want the water touching anything but stainless steel. Oh, I got a bag of those Seattle's Best beans a while back and really enjoyed that coffee. Reading through this thread, though, it seems I will be trying out several new to me brands and roasts. Great thread!

I dont drink normal drip coffee/americano.
I like espresso using fresh roasted beans from the local roasters

Ive started roasting my own beans recently

Food Channel trivia:
Alton Brown prefers to drink his coffee from a whiskey glass (I don`t believe he mentioned WHY....)
