Yeah -- sorry, I read it as landline. I still have the landline number I've had for decades, though not much use for it. The problem with cable is that if you try to drop the phone service, they treat it as a "service change" and quote you an entirely new rate for the reduced bundle. That new rate no longer had the "discounts" you supposedly had on your prior (ridiculously expensive) plan, so the new "bundle" rate for reduced service is basically the same as it was with more services

(little or no benefit from dropping phone service).
For cell, I'd guess that Mint or Consumer Cellular or even T-mobile (I think they are quoting $25 a line) is probably cheaper -- but no direct experience with any of them. The great thing about mobile is you can switch providers while keeping your same phone number -- but we haven't had time to shop plans (I'm certain we would save money if we did).
Seems like all the major providers now have free iPhone upgrades (Verizon has a free upgrade to an iPhone 15 Pro) -- my wife is reluctant to do with with her iPhone 8 even though the upgrade is free -- doesn't like Face ID, doesn't like that there is no longer a removable SIM card (for international travel), pretty sure she won't like the elimination of the physical silent switch (that function can be replicated with the new "action" button", but it's not as easy to be certain you are silenced). Can't wait to see what functionality Apple's "innovation" will get rid of on the iPhone 16
