I was at a state park a couple weeks ago. I was at a place where people go to picnic and I felt something brush against my leg like a cat might do. I looked down and there was a baby(ish) raccoon! He was about 1/3 the size of a typical adult. He wanted to be petted and/or fed so bad it was ridiculous. If I had some leather gloves in the truck, I would have tried but definitely didn't want to risk getting rabies.
He kept following me from shelter to shelter and walked a couple hundred yards with me around the large pond, but then fell back to the shelter areas. I gave him a few Doritos and snapped some pics. All of these were shot with the camera turned on the side in portrait orientation then cropped.
The camera and lens was a Canon Rebel XT which is one of the older models. 8 MP, tiny screen that is very inaccurate for colors. I bought the camera on craigslist for $25 with a junky Sigma 28-80 where the autofocus in the lens didn't work. Picked up an 18-55 IS kit lens for $40. For that cheap, I'll just keep this in the truck instead of the Canon SD550 point and shoot I usually keep.
Ran across these while a friend and I were on a little hiking, photography outing.
Molly, the one in the middle was pretty friendly and let me pet and rub her head.
This is the stray/feral that showed up late last winter in the back yard. She began to trust us as we fed her and sat outside. Finally started coming in to explore and use the box and finally to eat. In July she had kits and in August we caught them to bring them in and spay them. Mom just came in by herself and stayed with the kits to calm them. The kits have been adopted out and while we had no intention of keeping them or the mom, it now seems she is not going anywhere. Seems no one want black cats.
She will protected territory and has run outgoing chase off any cat or racoons invading the back yard, then comes right back in. She has decided the folding canvas chairing used outside is hers exclusively and commands the house from her throne in the living room, has to be the center of every conversation and if ignored will just adjust jer volume until not ignored any longer. Only member of the family that plays golf preferring the pink balls to the white.
