Clean rubbers work for me.
Make sure the rollers are really clean.
In my case I didn't clean the rollers aggressively enough. I always heard you need to clean them, but never how clean.
My Problem: Tape plays then stops. rewind then stops. Fast Forward then stops.
I have cleaned the rubber rollers before but never to this extent, never went all the way, and it worked.
I don't know all the technical terms but here's what I did.
I indiscriminately sprayed Deoxit and Faderlube in various moving parts.
Cleaned tape path: the heads, the steel spike like things (are those the capstans?) and the rubber rollers (pinch rollers?).
Result: very little but some improvement.
Rewind still stops, FForward still stops, Plays a few minutes and stops and tape loops out of cassette.

Aggressively cleaned the rubber rollers until qtips turned from a dark/black brown to a very light color. As I scrubbed id clean, I could feel the qtip gliding on the rubber smoother with most of the crud wiped off. I supposed I could have cleaned even more but I was afraid of wearing down the rubber roller.
I took the cassette door off and fooled the tape deck thinking a cassette was inserted by holding down the trigger in the upper right and pressed play.
While the rubber rollers were spinning I used a qtip with cleaning solution and scrubbed the rollers. Make sure you do it on the exit side of the steel spikes or you will get the qtip fibers caught in the turning steel spikes.
Result: I can now Rewind, Fast Forward and play a complete cassette.
I was worried I might have to replace the belt because it felt loose, or worse figure how to replace idler drives that I have read on the forum.
Talk about a saving some repair and parts costs! :tresbon:

Restored another one.
Update:
I just restored my Onkyo TA-2090 which I bought new, put in storage and gave up on when I tried to use it a couple years ago. Same problem: RW stops, FF stops, Play stops, Rec stops.
Using the same process in my previous post: Squirting Deox and Faderlube on the moving parts. Then scrubbing the rubber rollers. I mean really scrub not being dainty. I used about 7 qtips (both ends) dipped in cleaning solution. Using a clean end when it got ugly. I scrubbed until I could see the qtips turn from black/brown to a lighter shade of pale.
It now Rewinds, FF, Records, Plays!
Next is up is another tape deck I gave up on a while back which did the same thing ...
This is like discovering the Rosetta Stone or finally getting Wax-On Wax-Off!

I did a complete dis-assemble,an cleaned everything,the belts appeared a little loose so I tried to find some on-line and by contacting a few members who I thought could steer me in the right direction,no luck, I went on e-pray and contacted a seller who asked me to ship my old belts to him and he would match them up,,took a little time but the belts arrived monday,,Thanks Fred,, the man from MARS,,I,ll re-assemble tommorrow and see if the problem is cured
