Probably op amp issues would happen??? It won't blow up and stuff but, I really don't know what will happen. If a guy matches the original design there's less to be concerned about when trouble comes around. I wouldn't alter anything in that stage.
When it comes to modifications: I'll use tighter tolerance resistors, higher voltage rated caps, LED conversions. Minor stuff ya know. That's about it. Heck, I get anxiety from increasing main filter cap values when nothing else is available. The Japanese pieces from that area were designed well so I don't change much.
 
We can do whatever we want to our pieces cuz they're ours so I'm sorry if my tone sounded snarky regarding mods vs original design. I need a lot more experience before modifying my stuff cuz it makes troubleshooting harder for me sometimes. I've had to un-do some mods from Fbay purchases so I'm a kinda biased about it. Pardon.

I absolutely did not take your post as snarky or negative. We are good. All advise is gladly accepted, even if, and actually especially if it is contrary to my thoughts. I have done some dumb things in my life.

Your comments were valid. Making mods can be problematic. So far I haven't had any problems with raising the capacitor value in a purely power filter and buffering position, but there is always a first time. I would never change the value other than voltage in any other case.

I won't be traveling with any electronics other than my Handy. But if my sister lets me log in from her PC I'll stop by and say Hi.

(oh, we call Cell phones "Handys" over here. because, well, they are)

edit: The flight going over will be brutal because we have a 5+ hour layover in Detroit. So, like a 19+ hour trip to get to Phoenix, and then a 3 hour drive to get to my sister's place up in the mountains. Booze is free in first class but I tend to go light on that when flying, the thinner air makes it go to my head quicker than normal.

It was different when I was in the AF and flying. I had my own oxy mask and the run of the airplane. What I didn't have was a parachute. Everyone on the plane had a parachute except for the Crew Chief. That is the AF way of telling the airplane mechanic to do a good job.

I would rather fly cargo class any day over economy. This one time I spent a ridiculous amount of money for first class. Probably the only time in my life.

edit: there are few things in life more satisfying than lying on the crew bunk on the bulkhead behind the pilots and letting out an eyeburning fart, and then watching all of the crew pull on their oxy masks. :)

A guy could obtain the 1st class section all to himself with a properly planned cabbage diet. Airplanes & elevators are the best places for a good ol fashioned ass attack IMO.

I was an elevator mechanic the last 18 years of my working life. One of my proudest moments:

I was in the cabin, my foreman was on the roof of the cabin (where we normally work). We were positioned halfway up between floors so that I could work on the outside doors, from the inside.
I let out a bratwurst, beer, broccoli and onion fart was strong enough to flow up to my pal on the roof and he started swearing and pounding on the cabin roof. But he was trapped, he couldn't drive the cabin because I had the doors open and the inrush air flowed up. An elevator shaft is a chimney.

Just wanted to say @Bratwurst7s, talking me into buying Soder-Wick is much appreciated... I just had to buy my 2nd roll. The desolder vacuum gun is nice, but the wick comes in handy so much more often than I thought it would. The biggest use cases are weird angles where the gun won't fit, or removing wire wrap pins from boards without having to mess with the wire wrap. Awesome!

OK, so I guess that it is time for some updates.

I had a great vacation. Other than the plane tickets it wasn't even all that expensive. The look on my wife's face when she found out that she would be flying first class was worth the price of the ticket.
There was 2 inches of snow on the ground at my sisters place when we got there. In Arizona. At the end of April. I cried.
We had a great time with my Mom, brother and sister.
In Winslow Arizona they are still really proud of being in an Eagles song in 1972.
I saw the Grand Canyon. It's really big. And deep. And windy in places. I lost my hat at the Grand Canyon. The wind took it. Later I noticed that there are a lot of hats down in the Grand Canyon.
I stuck most of a Marantz MA500 monoblock in my suitcase and brought it home. Also 4 pairs of blue jeans and 3 cans of Spam.

2 weeks after I got home my Mom fell down, broke her arm in 3 places, had an OP to repair the arm and died 2 days later. I am still learning how to deal with that.
It has rained nearly every single day since I got home and is flooding here.

Ok, the foreplay is done. On to the amp.

A couple of days before I went on vacation I turned on the 2nd amp for the first time, on the DBT. The light bulb went dim right away. The idle current did not rise and the adjuster had no effect. There was +3.5v at pin one of IC501 instead of +43mV. I have seen this movie before so I turned off the amp and went on vacation.

At this point I have checked every transistor, diode, and electrolytic capacitor for proper installation and type/value. No discrepancies noted. I still have to recheck the ceramic caps and resistors.
Right now I am inspecting the board for poor solder connections and solder bridges. I think that since nearly every single component on the board is new we can guess that I made a mistake somewhere and will have to slog through each and every last part and connection and find it.

That is where I am at now.

James, I am so sorry to hear about your mom. I lost my younger brother almost exactly 3 years ago to the day (he was 26) and I personally got tired of hearing the same cliches from everyone, but just know that you'll be in my thoughts. Loss is a strange thing.

It is hard to deal with. I mean, yeah, mom was 91. And she had some health issues and was in a fairly fragile condition. So naturally we all knew the situation and odds.
But she was doing very good when I was there and was on an upswing, we had a great time and some very good conversations.
But shattering her arm, the OP and the drugs was just too much and she didn't have the reserves to make it through.

We are working on it.
You have to maintain your sense of humor.

Note that my mom's wishes were to be cremated.
So my sister wrote yesterday:
"Picked up Mom on Friday. She rode along with me to deliver flowers to her friends at the Home and I spent the social hour with them. Mom had to wait in the car."
My Mom would have laughed her butt off about that.

You learn to move on.
