Despicable state of kids today - Video

But can you confidently say the same for your entire generation? Remember, you wouldn't have known about this event if it weren't for new tech like cellphone cameras and the internet. Bad stuff now gets spread much easier and much further. Back when you were a kid, unless something like this happened within a mile or two of where you lived (and you knew people who saw it), you wouldn't have known about it.
I am not speaking for my generation- I thought that was clear. I understand what you're saying. I am speaking only of the event and it's relation to me and my sensibilities and no matter which generation, which world, or in which universe it occurs it is quite simply and plainly, wrong. That's all I am saying. Though this was a more confined incident, I make no distinction between this group and modern day gang behavior.

And the videoing- doesn't that make the offense even worse for you? And the uploading for all to see? C'mon now...

Not to open a can of Pandora's box of worms, but I think few here would argue about relative parenting... now, and then. I am just getting the feeling that some here are taking the "kids will be kids" line- and I disagree with a flourish of excitement. This is not normal behavior.

A few weeks back, it came out that one of our Presidential candidates participated in an occurrence at his high school wherein he and several classmates held down a fellow student with longer hair and forcibly cut off said hair. Teenagers being jerks is certainly nothing new.

(not getting political with this, it's simply an example from the 1960s that was recently in the news)

Respectfully, being jerks like some of us were as kids and what took place in this video are two very different things IMO.

Please know I'm not attempting to speak for anyone, and accurate generalization is an incredible difficult objective to achieve-- but there is more of this type of vicious, cold-hearted behavior now (it seems) than ever before.

Feel free to disagree, but just because there were jerks before video cameras doesn't make this acceptable to write off.

let me to summarize some of the sentiments

THE PAST IT WAS MOAR BETTER!!

meaning we are old :D

as long as there has been young and old humans there has been older humans sayin' "kids today" near as I can figure.

There have always been "problem" kids, and there most likely always will be. The big question is, what is society going to do about it? It seems like a lot of the time, they just ignore the problem, hoping it'll fix itself. Then these kids grow up to become murderers & politicians. :nono:

Tybrad- i echo and support everything you've said. And, I'm a Physics major. nice sig. :)
Thanks. Feynman is my idol above all other phys/math types. And you being a physics guy is cool to. Come visit the "Physics Puzzlers" thread.

Yours in acceleration,
Tyler

Well, yeah...again, it's not that being cruel to this point/level is a new thing...it's just that you know about it. I would think it seems like their are more, not because there is, but because it is easy to spread (on the internet or filler-seeking news outlets), and you have the advantage of viewing it while being a well-rounded adult.

Feel free to disagree, but just because there were jerks before video cameras doesn't make this acceptable to write off.

I don't think anyone is writing it off, but I think some are disagreeing with the generational aspect of it...not the moral aspect.

I could only watch the first two minutes of that. :gigglemad Those kids make me want to puke! :gigglemad What a sad, sad statement they make about themselves. And this is the hope for our future? :thumbsdn: :thumbsdn: :thumbsdn:

Disgusting maggots!

I would beat those kids so hard that pieces fell off and they'd remember me every time they looked in a mirror for the rest of their miserable lives.

These kids also grow up to be parents. I think that's the root of the problem.

I really don't see anything on the video that I didn't occasionally see in the mid '80s from time to time at my very average middle class white school in suburban Ohio. It's often allowed to happen not because these kids have parents who are not going to paddle them, but because the parents did the same bullshit when they were kids, got away with it, and see nothing wrong with it.

There's evidence of this all over. Parents saying the other kid (or adult in this piece) deserved it or should have fought back if they felt bullied. It's our society. Survival of the biggest asshole. It's how business works. It's how sports works. It's in every movie. It's how everything works. The strong get the cake, the weak get bullied. So why wouldn't it trickle down to the kids?

As opposed to vintage gang behavior? Anyone think stories like "West Side Story" or "The Outsiders" came completely out of the blue? Violent teenage gangs are nothing new.

Modern day version of bragging at the malt shop.

I disagree wholeheartedly. Nothing has changed, except the means of communication.

Respectfully, being jerks like some of us were as kids and what took place in this video are two very different things IMO.

Maybe between what you personally did and this incident, but this sort of thing has been going on forever. Compared to past centuries, violent crime is at extreme lows.

Please know I'm not attempting to speak for anyone, and accurate generalization is an incredible difficult objective to achieve-- but there is more of this type of vicious, cold-hearted behavior now (it seems) than ever before.

Because you're seeing more of it with modern communications and a 24-hour news cycle hungry to fill the airwaves. 20 years ago you'd never heard of this outside of the town where it happened.

Feel free to disagree, but just because there were jerks before video cameras doesn't make this acceptable to write off.

I agree completely. The only thing I disagree about is that these sorts of incidents are somehow new. I remember a teacher being assaulted by a student on more than one occassion when I was in high school, 1994 and 1995 seemed to be rough years for it.

Hehehehehe...How many of you ever had to go outside & Pick your Switch off the Weepin' Willow tree, only to be sent out to get a BIGGER one, 'cause the first one was Puny? I don't remember being "Whupped" more than a time or 2 in my life, I sorta Got the Message, & Straightened Up & Flew Right...And my parents NEVER "Beat" me, because they LOVED me, & were trying to impress upon me WHY you don't act "That" way...And Actions Have Consequences...The kid who sasses his parents today, bullies other kids/bus monitors later, & NEVER has to answer for his actions, could likely grow up to be the hoodlum who carjacks you, yr wife or daughter later on..."****, I did THAT, they didn't do anything much to me, what ELSE can I get away with ?!?"

I'll bet these kids' discipline has consisted of nothing more severe than a “time out". Its obvious they have no respect or fear of their parents either.

Understood.

As for the video, what I was saying is that the fact that people have the ability to share video with the whole world is exposing us to more of these events that may have happened just as often before the internet, we just didn't know about it.
And you can't say whether the current generation would be the only ones that would share videos like this on the internet since other generations didn't have access to the tech that would allow them to.

I don't think anyone is writing it off, but I think some are disagreeing with the generational aspect of it...not the moral aspect.
Exactly

That being said, kids today are complete savages because they did not have the honor of growing up when I did. Also, my bus driver was awesome, he played gameboy when waiting for kids and was a great guy - number 372 morning and afternoon:yes:
Wait, what?

EDIT: This article explains what I'm trying to get across quite well (especially the part about more easily accessible information inflating the scale of the problem in the public consciousness):

Just watched the vid. Sad. It appeared that students were unloading on the bus monitor on the last day of school and figured they had nothing to lose.

The only good thing I saw was that viewers disliked the video 10:1. It would be more comforting if the ratio was orders of magnitude higher but then again it probably would be if the viewing audience was primarily adults, which I suspect it is not.

In any event I consider the video to be typical internet flotsam. This stuff has probably been happening on school buses for generations but IMO broadcasting it serves little value unless parents discuss it with their children.

Poor lady looks like my Mom. I had tears and had to stop watching. This sort of thing was happening when I was a kid and will continue. We can only hope these children grow up to regret their youthful actions and are good to everyone in their adulthood.

Wait, what?

That was a horribly mangled attempt at a "joke". The first sentence was just a jest at how "everything was better when I was a kid" thing goes, and the second was actually just a fond memory. I uh...should've edited/proofread that a bit better :o

I don't think kids are better or worse than they probably ever were.

EDIT: I know it'll still be quoted in your comment, but i'm going to edit that bit out for my own sanity.

I, mmm, normally stay away from controversial subject matter, especially due to my opinions & AK's rules, but on this one I have to say that this is the end result of what I call "The Lifting of The Hand."

There's some half-truth to the above poster's sentiment as not all parents are laxed in rearing their children. As a matter of fact, I know numerous wonderful parents that have raised their children to be respectful to others, but it is when they are away from them, the little demon on their shoulder talks to them & they listen.

I couldn't take watching for more than a couple of minutes & just pushed away from my computer & lowered my head in prayer.

A comment that seems to be flagged now stated the lady should expect to be talked about in this manner due to her being so-called fat. Hmmm!

I wish I could give the lady a hug too. :tears:
Rome

Rome,

I share your sentiment. A few years ago I was in extraordinarily good mood after leaving a Willy Nelson show in downtown Detroit. On the way back to my car I came across a homeless man in a dark nook of the parking structure. He was rummaging through a garbage can and I stopped to say hello. He was non vocal, eyes bulging in a way that was obviously unhealthy, haggard with a shaggy salt and pepper beard, and about six feet tall when slumped. His life had obviously been a hard one.

I gave him twenty bucks, told him somebody loved him, and everybody needs a hug sometimes. When I tried to hug him he flinched back and extended his hand to show me what he was holding. It was a golf ball sized wad of hamburger. He was afraid of getting it on my clothes. I told him not to worry about it and he gave me a hug and cried.

That moment changed me down deep.

I disagree that it has been happening for generations. I am now 60 years old but I can assure you that even the worst behaved kids that I went to school with, present company included  , would ever think of treating an adult the way these kids did. There was always a certain amount of respect and consideration that adults, all adults, were given. Kids would pick on and bully other kids, sure, but even then there were limits. As cruel as kids were to each other, there were assumed consequences for crossing the line with an adult. Mouthing off is one thing, doing what these kids is way, way beyond that.

The BS that Barney and Friends injected into kids heads was reinforced by their parents and those same parents forced the schools to do their job of raising their kids while not allowing them to so much as hurt their feelings much less paddle their ass when they so obviously deserved it. And now we get to see the results. :sigh:
