Unfortunately, when folks move to a retirement community they sell or leave behind big items like 50 yr old consoles. I usually find 1 or 2 a year around here. Why don't you PM me. Maybe we can work something out. I probably have a couple of projects that I'll never get to.

Just ran across this project and a couple of simple questions. The box size seems to make things cramped underneath. Did you consider a pair of mono amps rather than a stereo and if yes, why did you decide against it? Alternatively what about a 2-chassis stereo amp with the power supply occupying the 2nd chassis and using an umbidical cord.
The power switch is located on the back with the inputs, power cord, etc. Why not mount it in the front? You put an inline fuse holder under the chassis. Why not use a through the chassis mounted fuse holder or a surface mounted holder?

Yep, I considered both options. I didn't do monoblocks because I'm not savvy enough to adapt the power supply for that - I was working off an existing schematic, one that I knew worked. Didn't want to mess with a good thing. Also, the extra parts - iron, tubes, enclosure, sockets and other - would have run the price up a bit (maybe another $100?). The separate PS w/ umbilical would have been nice, but again the extra enclosure and associated connectors also would have added to the cost.
Don't get me wrong - I like the idea of monoblocks in this aluminum box and might someday get around to building a different SET amp that way.
Switch on the back to avoid running AC in places where it might hum, and I didn't want to clutter up the face of the amp. Also, I usually power everything up with a power strip, so I don't use the switch much. Same for the fuse holder (reduced clutter), but also that the length of a through hole fuse holder into the box would have been hard to negotiate with the space I had. I don't like the inline holder I used, will probably replace it with a surface mount block inside someday.

Hey thanks, Jason. I rather like the industrial look of it, too. I'm in the process of putting together a phono pre and perhaps a passive volume control in matching cases for a little "mini" system. Ultimately it might end up in the office.
I'm posting to this thread more because I'm thinking there might be a chance that a few of those originally subscribed might still be around....... vs commenting on Nate's build. Suffice it to say, this amp was 'inspirational' to me. As such, I've decided to take Nate's lead and 'clone' the 'clone'......so to speak. So, Thanks Nate! I'm looking forward to my project! Out of respect........ I'll keep your Olson name in my title, but perhaps add the 'Maggie' name instead of Dolly..... as a reference to my little SE Maggie amp. So, as my Edcor iron arrived yesterday (after 2 months of waiting)..... looks like I'm now off to go find a chassis on which to embark on this project. It's my hope to end up with a 'functional' amp, not nearly as neatly built as Nates (Incredible workmanship!!)....but hopefully it will work as well. I'm using his 'final' circuit......and the iron per his recommendations. So, with luck, in time, I'll be up and running. I'll document my thread, titled 'Maggie Olson'.....and hope that some of those that contributed to Nate's trouble shooting will also be around to help with my build. Again.....thanks Nate! Hope to see you on Maggie Olson. Tom D.

Well..... you give me too much credit! I DO have the schematic......and if you like, send me your email addy and I'll send it to you as an attachment. I'd prefer not to post it here, since AK will only let me post the same file once...... and I plan to post it on the Maggie Olson thread when I get it started. As to the list of parts, I hadn't made that up yet....as I figured I probably had most of the 'stuff' lying around here. But, perhaps I should make that up...... just for good measure! If I do, I'll post it on the Maggie Olson thread as well.....but also send you a copy. The big thing is getting the jump on this project by ordering the iron from Edcor. It takes them a LONG time to deliver....as they consider these to be 'special order' units......and state that these take 4 to 6 weeks from order to ship. It took 'em over 8 weeks to get mine out......so.....figure that into your 'schedule' of build. I'm going to have to find a suitable chassis.....as I don't plan to cram mine into Nate's little 7X7 beauty! I wish I had the skills to do that.....but I need some real estate to work in. So, I'm going to find an 8 X 12 or there about..... and top-mount my trannies....as well as possibly one cap. The rest will go 'under'.....and with only 4 tube sockets to worry about...... I should have plenty of working room. That's roughly the size of a standard piece of paper.....which isn't too big...... Should look nice when I'm done! WC
