Dual 1218/1219/1228/1229 Appreciation thread

We have three Duals in use around the homestead. The lowly 1209 is used exclusively for 7" 45's with the stacking spindle (Stanton 680), the 1229 is used in the office for background music during the day (Shure V15IIimp with Jico SAS) and we have a 1241 in the kitchen for entertainment (Shure M91E). We love all the Duals- they are all elegant workhorses.

I have a 1219 also bought from Bill. Beautiful custom base and cover that he makes himself. I'm using a Shure V-15 type III as Bill recommended, and I'm just blown away by the sound! I'm sure you'll enjoy it when it arrives.

It's been a while I'm sure there are others that are still lovin' those 1200 series decks and Toronto Maple Leafs . This is my new purchase 1229 with Shure V15II and Jico stylus for $45.00 bucks and a few NOS parts and a lot of reading and degreasing and re-lubing and modding and just lovin' it. Has this beauty up to snuff. Thanks internet and audiokarma. Like to see more pictures on this appreciation thread too long dead from people who have enjoyed and learned from this site and brought back a classic from over 40 years ago and counting.

miss my 1219, and my 1229. at the time I didn't have the resources to really exploit how good they could be.

The spindle on the 1229 is removable, right? I'm wondering how a clamp (hockey puck) can be effective on that table, since it isn't able to resist downward pressure. A proper weight, not a clamp, is the way to go.

That said, I don't even bother with weights on my Duals. Bass performance and imaging is not an issue at all.

The puck is just a basic weight fits over removable single play spindle loose so it is easy to remove. I just use it mainly because I like how it looks and don't think it hurts and my 50+ old ears couldn't hear the difference even if there was.

I bought my 1229q from GW for $7.99! Although it did work, I sent it to Bill @ Fix My Dual for restoration, (in 2007). It has been a GREAT turntable ever since, with no problems whatsoever!!! As far a the cartridge, it came with a Shure M95ed Hi-Track. I replaced the stylus with an Ed Saunders, (which was just ok), and replaced it recently with the EVG stylus from the Korean Ebay seller. I must say the EVG made a leaps and bounds difference over the Sanders stylus. It just sounds better over all ranges. I will never part with it. If I was to make any improvements it might be a Shure V15 III, and a custom plinth, (the original isn't the prettiest). I'm always looking for another DUAL.

My 1219 is coming in the Mail
From fixmydual.com!

I want to hear what you think about them.

Where you got it, how long you have had it! Do you like it? What cart/stylus?

Thanks a lot,

MacKat
I just got back from FixMyDual. If I could, let me say Bill is the only place you ever want to go for your Dual. He rebuilt my 1218 and it is great. Meeting Bill personally, I can tell you he appreciates your Dual as much or more than us.

I have a 1219 I bought from Bill. I concur that he is passionate and dedicated to these Dual turntable, and he is a down to earth country gentleman. I have a Shure M97xe cartridge mounted.

I spiced my 1219 by having a different plinth made and a new dustcover. It gave my table a completely different look, very elegant.

That a sweet looking base/dust cover!

I switched from a Dual CS505 to a Dual 1225 to a Dual 1219 in a white CK20W plinth. Since a few weeks I also got my hands on a white Dual CV120 amplifier. After obtaining that amp I started begging my dad to let go of a pair of Philips SA5422 speakers I knew he had stashed on his attick.

in action playing Duran Duran ->

The plinth has this "hidden" space where you can store a couple of headshell mounts with element, a single adaptor and the changer pen.

It sounds awesome since I put a new needle on the Sure M75-6 element. Only downside is that the automatic needs tweaking. It will start, but the handle slides of the pen, and it will return, but not completely on the rest so the platter won't stop spinning. So I need to open it up and check if I need to create a new steuerpimpel. I already relubricated the whole lot accordingly to the service manual.

I just recently brought my 1229 back into service after a couple of years of rest. I'm having a lot of fun playing it, and getting some of my favorite cartridges set up on cartridge holders. Once they're set up, it is so easy to swap carts, and then, after a quick rebalance of the tonearm and a reset of the VTF, we're all ready to go with the next record! First, I set up my Stanton 881, then my Pickering XL-33U (a P-mount version of the XV-15) on its 1/2 adapter, then my Shure M3D. Now, which to do next? My Pickering V-15 or my Shure M97? What fun. George Shearing playing now, then on to some Jonas Jones Quartet when this side finishes!
