Dual 622 Anti-resonator

Hello again lini. I sure did refer to the link you gave me and I thank you for that. But the info I got is difference from yours. Another info I got from someone who has the same model as mine. I wonder does anti-resonator setting depends on people desire? But on the manual it is based on the cartridge total weight and for what I am using the Ortofon DN 155E is weighing at 2.5g. I took a snapshot on the Dual 622 manual and it says 11.5 and yours is 12.5 tuning scale. Please refer to the photo. Thank you again.

A bug, it would seem. I.e., in that addendum to the manual for the 622 the tuning scale value for the ULM155E would seem to be derived from the curve for a vertical compliance of 30 µm/mN. However, the official vertical compliance spec for the ULM55E/DN155E used to be 25 µm/mN, as you can see there: https://www.hifi-archiv.info/Dual/systeme/ulm55-02.jpg Hence I'd rather trust the diagram in the manual for the 626.

I will try that 626 manual.
What was the “bug”?

The bug Lini points out is the vertical compliance difference. GL Robbi with the table, I think you'll be super happy when it's good and ready!

I cant wait. I tried playing it but I know something is lacking. A new stylus would make a whole lot of difference.

I read the 626 manual and it was more detailed compared to the 622. It is indeed at 12.5 tuning scale according the the 2.5g weight of the ULM 55e.
Now, if I have to replace the stylus (pretty soon) with an Ortofon OM10 will there be any weight difference, even if I am keeping the original cartridge?

Can't use the OM10 with the original cartridge. You'll need the 1/2" adapter (per the advice earlier) and the counterweight addition, to offset the added weight. I'd say buy a replacement stylus from LPTunes for the 55e, see if you like the table, then move forward with the additional requirements if you're happy.

Ok I will review and see all my options.
Thank you.

So I finally figured out how to set the anti-resonator and balanced the tone arm and anti skating. Tested it today and it sounds pretty good. It could be a lot better with a new stylus or cart. But I need to learn how to uninstall the cart first. So later today while I was cleaning my TT. I decided to put a mirror under my cartridge just to check if there are any screws I can find that holds the cart from the shell unto the tone arm. Well check what I found. A soldered metal. Is this even normal? Have guys seen this before? Im surprise the sound I heard today was coming from this. I inly saw I screw all the way on the back of the shell. There is another tiny screw on top of shell but that thing will not move though. Im debating if I should take it to a professional TT technician. Please refer to the photos. What do you think guys?

Robbi:

- Screw marked in pic 5: That's the one, that fixes the cart to the headshell

- Missing grub screw in pic 6: That's the one, that woud prevent the finger lift lever from being swivelled back, thus unlucking the needle lock.

- Other screw marked in pic 6: That's the one, that fixes the headshell to the arm tube.

- Metal strips and solder connection: Can't properly see, what's going one there, but I'd deem it likely, that the arm wiring would also include a fifth, black wire, and that this wire would have a solder connection to those two metal strips - one for grounding the arm tube and the other for grounding the metal parts of the headshell (fingerlift, plate on the top...). In case you'd have a multimeter at at hand, I'd suggest to measure the resistance between the end of the ground lead and either both of those metal strips or the finger lift lever and the arm tube, in order to verify that assumption. Provided your 622 does sport a separate ground lead, that is - if not, one of (or even both of) the outer RCA plug contacts should also carry the chassis, tonearm & headshell ground.

- An OM needle 10 should fit on the ULM55E body (although it might require a bit of adhesive tape around the generator shell to prevent a rather loose fit), but would be likely to play less loud than an original DN155E. I'd rather suggest to buy an original DN155E or DN152E, though. Alternatively you could try a 3rd party, black diamond type replacement for the DN155E, in case you'd prefer to spend not quite as much - however, in case of these the quality can vary quite a bit.

So I manage to disconnect the headshell. I found out that it is the ground wire (black) soldered to the tone arm. Thank you again Dual Master.
I have a new cartridge that has a total weight of 6.1g. Do I need to put an extra weight on the counter weight? Is the minimum 6.5g?

Well, to be honest, it's a bit mysterious, what Dual had in mind regarding halfinch-mount cartridges in combination with those models among the 1st gen. ULM mount turntables, that could come with a regular or with a tuning antiresonator counterweight variant.

I.e., according to the user manuals for the 1st generation proprietary ULM mount models, that could come either with a regular or a tuning antiresonator counterweight variant, the balance range for halfinch-mount carts is 4.5 to 10 g - including mounting material, that is, but whether that would also include the halfinch-mount adaptor plate or rather not, seems unclear. And what's also unclear, is, whether the exemplars, that came with the tuning antiresonator counterweight variant would also already have come with suitable halfinch-mount adaptor kit variant (or at least a suitable weight disc kit) as part of the original accessories. I'd deem that rather likely, though, because for these exemplars the manuals speak of adding one weight disc at the rear end of the antiresonator counterweight for cartridges, that weigh up to 6.5 g, and two weight discs for heavier cartridges - while the optional adaptor kit G (part number 262 186) would only contain one weight disc (and would hence appear to have only been intended for exemplars with the regular counterweight), and the Dual accessory catalogues neither contained an optional kit G variant for 1st gen. ULM mount model exemplars with the tuning antiresonator couterweight, nor an optinional weight disc kit (with suitable double-sided screw and two weight discs) for that.

Anyway, yes, you'd need an add-on weight disc - at least if you'd like to stick with the originally intended dynamic balancing. Whereas in case you could also live with static balancing, it would depend on the actual cartridge weight including mounting material and the required tracking force of the cartridge (or respectively its needle).

Thank you again Dual Master. I want to utilize my cartridge from my other TT. It is rather new and sounds really good to my ears. Coming to find out last night, it is only in Europe where I can buy such weight disc of 20g for almost $100 (price and shipping). In addition of the 1/2” adapter for $25. In that amount maybe I will just buy myself an Ortofon OM10 or OM20. Again, I am not familiar with the sound quality of Ortofons. My current Ortofon is quite old and sounds ok. Ortofon or my AT cart? What would you do Dual master? Which cart would you use for the Dual 622?

(...) Which cart would you use for the Dual 622?

Well, I'd surely not spend already 125 bucks just on halfinch-mount adaptation for a CS622 - especially not for an AT-VM95EN, as I'd deem that a suboptimal match in terms of compliance. So I'd grab either an original DN155E or DN152E (or maybe even try my luck with a priceworthy black diamond replacement), as already mentioned above - or an original OM needle 20 or 30 and try, whether that works well enough in combination with the original ULM55E body (if so, done - if not, I'd visit Dualfred(.de) and get one of his ULM1-OMx bodies).
