Econowave Help Needed

Yes, I had a virtual machine running and windows on top of that. It strangled my Mac so when I completed the box plans for this build I removed it all so I could use my Mac again. I plan to get a cheap windows laptop to design an improved box. But that was not on my radar just yet as I wanted to work on this proto build for awhile. But maybe I should be looking at that sooner than later.

I am actually pretty satisfied with the LF and the box seems to be working well. Wish it looked better. I am interested in getting the HF dialed… position, imaging and modding with EarlK’s XO update. But if I can squeeze some extra bass out of this then I’m game. I really don’t want to run my sub.
 
Hi @loaded great thread man! Zilch would have loved to see this build and @EarlK's beyond flat crossover response. I might need to break out the table saw and make some sawdust! ...and on that note, is there any chance you could update your first post in the thread with all of the updated information (Crossover values, drivers, circuit diagram) from your final build like Zilch used to do? For example. :idea: You could add in an UPDATE: or EDIT: addendum with all the info. Other folks would probably enjoy building this up!

I absolutely plan to organize the thread to be more helpful to others. At the moment I am unable to spend much time on this as our power has been out since Wednesday due to the wildfires in LA. We are far from the fires but the power company has preemptively shut the power off until the winds/danger is past. Been a crazy couple of days to say the lost.

So yes, I will edit the thread once normality has returned to my life.
 
Got the parts to implement Earl's XO updates. I couldn't find the .082 mh inductor, but I thought I might be able to unwind to spec a couple of .2mh inductors I already have. I've heard of it, but have never done it. If not, does anyone have a source for the .082mh inductor?
 
Unwinding inductors definitely works. I've done that regularly. Just need to be able to measure them, naturally.

.082 is definitely an unusual value. If it were me, I'd probably get a pair of 0.1mH inductors and just unwind them As you already have 0.2mH, that will definitely work, too.

The difference between 0.1mH and 0.082mH is negligible ( especially up there in the UHF ) >> just use 0.1mH if that suits you better.

Purple is 0.1mH ++ Green is 0.082mH

thanks for the confirmation Gordon. I have those 0.03mh indcutors laying around, but, I really don't feel like going down the road of learning how to measure inductance with a mulitmeter. trying to stay focused here. I'll order .1mh coils and go with that. Thanks for the comparison Earl! Doubt I'll be hearing that high well enough to pick up on the difference.
 
I have been trying to update the thread to include a summary of the project Zilch style as requested. But I have not been able to figure out how to edit? No edit button, so there must be another way?
 
I guess the ability to edit the post has perhaps expired? Maybe a mod could help you.

If you've got this far you can definitely unwind an inductor to change its inductance. Zilch and I did this a few times over the years.

got to audition the updated XO per Earl's notes... wow! Seems a bit louder. the HF still sounds very nice, smooth and clear. The real difference is the LF. It really hits low now and is pulling some information down low I wasn't hearing much before. I actually feel I might need to pull them out of the corners a bit to balance it somewhat. But I'll listen some more and enjoy and see how I feel after some hours on these new XO's.

Been busy working outside... spring yardwork hits too soon in California. But I did do a quick RTA on the speakers with the updated XO. As before, taken 2 feet out on axis out of phase. It will be later in the summer before I can get into more measurements. But I will measure! Thanks for the patience and just wanted to get this up to show the results of Earlk’ awesome XO.

I return...

It took over a year but I finally finished my ewaves last week!

In short, I love them. They started out as a smaller box with horn on top, but the wife didn't like the look. So I made bigger boxes and put the horn inside. Completed cabinets are 3.59 ft3, not sure of the actual volume after installing everything.

I have been doing nothing but listening to them every night for the last week. They are legitimately great sounding speakers. Way beyond my expectations when I first set out on this project. They are well balanced with huge bass and clear highs and smooth mids. They image great and you can really hear separation in the instruments. Vocals are awesome, probably my favorite thing about these. And I don't need a sub anymore!

The whole point of this project was to cobble something together good enough to hold me over until I could get back into some klipsch heritage after having to sell my La Scala's due to a move. But now, I'm good.

I have to thank the AK community as I would not be anywhere close to finished or happy without the Forum's help. I probably would have fizzled out awhile ago. Thanks to Pete B for the help on driver selections! Big thanks to EarlK for the magic Crossover recipe and special thanks to Grindstone for the knowledge transfer, moral support and everything else.

I will start on some measurements soon as the next phase in the journey starts. But I wanted to post here with the update as I have been silent on this thread for a long time.

When I was building my mockup Altec 604 cabs, I saw several boxes with short legs fitted on the sides and liked them alot. I guess it is part of the Shindo style. I would use blockier square legs perhaps on a tray to support the speakers so I wouldn't damage the cabinet itself.

Yes! This is what I want! Was thinking like you that I could mount the legs to a platform that the speaker rests on. However, not sure how it will look as the shindo speakers I’ve seen have a matching flush baffle. My soakers have the black baffle and will have grille cloth soon. I think it would look funny with the black baffle but with grille cloth it might be okay.
